Why we invaded Bobrisky’s birthday party — Police

August 31, 2019 0
The Lagos State Police Command says it stormed the venue of the birthday party of popular cross-dresser, Bobrisky, due to sensitive information it received.
The police spokesperson, Bala Elkana, said this during a brief interview with PUNCH on Saturday.
He said, “I can confirm that we sealed off the place based on credible information. That is all I will say for now until the operation is over.”
Efforts by our correspondent to know the details of the information were abortive, as the police spokesperson declined to give details.
The police had stormed the venue of Bobrisky’s birthday party which was said to have been attended by some celebrities as well as cross-dressers and homosexuals.
Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okuneye, hosted the party at ‘The Pearl Gardens’, Wole Olateju Crescent, Off Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
Earlier in the week, the Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, threatened to go after Bobrisky and others like him, describing the cross-dresser as a disgrace to the nation.
The police had earlier in the year warned all homosexuals to flee the country or be dealt with in accordance to the Anti-Same Sex Marriage law which prescribes a 14-year jail term for all persons involved in a homosexual relationship.
Former Public Relations Officer of the Zone 2 Police Command, Mrs Dolapo Badmos, had said “If you are homosexually inclined, Nigeria is not a place for you. There is a law (Same-Sex Prohibition Act) here that criminalises homosexual clubs, associations, and organisations with penalties of up to 15 years in jail.
“So, if you are a homosexual in nature, leave the country or face prosecution. But before you say, ‘does this matter?’ Kindly note that anything against the law of the land is criminal and all crimes will be punished accordingly no matter how small you think it is.
“The law says a person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies or organisations, directly or indirectly makes a public show of same-sex amorous relationship in Nigeria commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 10 years. Anyone convicted of entering into a same-sex marriage contract or civil union faces up to 14 years imprisonment. All LGBT candidates in Nigeria should beware.”

CAN kicks against RUGA settlements in Nigeria

August 31, 2019 0
On May 21, the Federal Government approved what it termed the RUGA settlement scheme, to curb open grazing of animals nationwide.
RUGA entails the settlement of animals by farmers in an organised place with the provision of necessary amenities.
The President of CAN, Pastor Samson Ayokunle, announced the position of the association at a church leaders’ summit in Lagos on Saturday.
“We, the Christian body call on the Federal Government to immediately suspend and abrogate the RUGA settlement programme,’’ Ayokunle stated.
According to him, anything that smacks of mutual distrust should be avoided in the interest of national unity.
He said also that the perception by many Christians that CAN had not been showing enough interest in national issues was wrong.
“Let me state it here that our position, although it may differ from that of government is not opposition but a way of helping those in government.
“Our position is a way of helping those in government by calling their attention to the dangers that may come from the proposed action if adequate caution is not considered.
“We, the Christian body also kick against the Control of Waterways Bill now before the National Assembly. The Control of Waterways by the Federal Government Bill before the National Assembly should be rejected.
“Waterways in each locality should be controlled by local authorities. God created the waterways there. At most, they should be controlled by State Governments.”
The CAN chief advised the Federal Government to intensify efforts on the establishment of modern ranching facilities, abattoirs and meat processing firms.
Also speaking, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, said that he supported the position of CAN on the RUGA settlement issue.
“CAN must do everything possible to let the world know that CAN is one. Whatever the CAN president says is the final,” he said.
The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, in a message, said that building of the nation is in the hands of God.
He pleaded with Nigerians to pray to God for supernatural intervention in the affairs of Nigeria, saying: “we need to cry to God to help Nigeria.”
Osinbajo was represented by the Chaplain of Aso Rock Chapel, Pastor Sheyi Malomo.
Church leaders at the summit include Pastor Felix Omobude, President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria.
Elder Napo Emuchey, President of the Organisation of African Instituted Churches, Rev. S.T.V. Adegbite, President of the Christian Council of Nigeria and Benebo Fubara-Manuel, among others.
The theme of the summit is: “RUGA: The Church Response in the 21st Century.’’

President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged not to interfere with the operations of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as it strives to uncover and prosecute corrupt public officials.
The president made the pledge at the graduation of 328 cadets of the detective superintendent course 8 of the EFCC, on Saturday, in Kaduna state.

The president gave assurance that his administration would offer the EFCC all the necessary support to ensure effective discharge of its responsibilities.
He also said the government would improve their working condition to enhance their efficiency, saying the fight against corruption remains a cardinal objective of his government.
Speaking on the progress made in the anti-corruption war in the last four years, Buhari said the treasury single account and whistleblower initiatives have helped in blocking financial leakages.
“This progress has facilitated the recovery of looted funds in the country,” NAN quoted him to have said.
The president commended the anti-graft agency for being part of the success story, urging them to continue with the good work in order to have a well-developed country.

On his part, Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the EFCC, said Nigerians have a responsibility of fighting against corruption, so as to have a well-developed nation.

August 31, 2019 0
The Ebonyi state government has offered amnesty to ghost workers discovered during a verification exercise carried out in the state.
In exchange, the state is requesting the return of the illegal salaries received.
The offer was contained in a statement signed by Emmanuel Uzor, chief press secretary to David Umahi, governor of the state.
According to the statement, the amnesty period would last from August 30 to September 10.
It said those who embraced the offer would not face prosecution but those who declined the amnesty opportunities would face the law and all monies they took from the government would be recovered.
“We are giving the amnesty to all ghost workers within the stipulated period to surrender and negotiate the repayment of all illegally collected funds to the state and Local Government Areas (LGA),” the statement said.
“The state government is happy to announce that it has made significant progress as the verification has saved it and the LGA about N60 million for one month.
“This exercise will be regular until all ghost workers or workers who benefit from illegal, multiple payments are flushed, to ensure more employment opportunities for our brothers and sisters.
“We have procured the services of financial institutions with bias in Information Communication Technology (ICT) to deploy Bank Verification Number (BVN) in tracking and prosecuting ghost workers.”
The statement also said the governor has directed the relevant authorities to ensure immediate payment of all workers’ salaries, pension and other entitlements for August.

It attributed the delay in payment of the August salaries to the verification aimed at exposing ghost workers especially among teachers and other categories of workers.

Matawalle said the federal government will still go on with its own Ruga settlement programme after the state’s pilot scheme.

US police fire pepper spray after pro-Trump ‘Straight Pride’ parade

August 31, 2019 0
US police fired pepper spray Saturday after counter-demonstrators accused them of protecting “Straight Pride” advocates who support President Donald Trump, and refused to let officers re-open a road.
The unrest came after the counter-protesters and “Straight Pride” group — considered homophobic extremists by their opponents — staged dueling rallies in Boston.
There was no serious violence during the rallies themselves, which involved groups of several hundred.
But after the “Straight Pride” group had dispersed, the counter-protesters accused police of protecting “Nazis,” chanted “shame on you” and formed a human chain which police tried to get through, an AFP photographer said.
Officers fired pepper spray and made several arrests.
Earlier outside City Hall, in what is one of America’s most liberal cities, people from the two camps stood close enough to yell in each other’s faces and in a few instances threw coffee cups and soil at each other.
The demonstrations came as tensions simmer between leftists and white nationalists across the United States, and critics of Trump say his rhetoric has fueled extremism.
Black-clad riot police with batons and gas masks stood by in formation, ready to snuff out any trouble.
Many in the “Straight Pride” group wore capes or other attire bearing the US stars and stripes flag.
Some also bore Israeli flags, while the counter-protesters hurled chants of “Nazi” and “Free Palestine.”
An AFP photographer saw the remains of several US flags that had been burned.
Before the more serious unrest, a couple of counter-demonstrators scuffled with police and threw dirt and eggs at them.
A group calling itself Super Happy Fun America organized the “Straight Pride” parade in response to the gay pride parades that take place, jamming the streets of US cities every year.
Critics say the “Straight Pride” organizers are white-supremacists whose intent is to bait members of the LGBT community in Boston.
The marshal of the “Straight Pride” rally was Milo Yiannopoulos, a prominent and provocative member of the far-right movement in America who has been banned from several social media sites. He also happens to be gay.
“My fellow homosexuals have been embarrassing me for decades,” he told AFP. “Finally I found my crowd.”
“Honestly, as a gay man, I have been embarrassed and attacked by my fellow homosexuals for most of my life, and these people feel like home.”
He added that he stands for traditional Christian family values — “even if I don’t always live them.”

– An ‘oppressed majority’ –

Rachel Domond, an organizer of the counter-demonstration, said she turned out to “stand up against this hatred that is here in Boston, and nationally.”
Trump’s rise, she told AFP, had made people like the white supremacists feel “empowered to say those statements and be more public about it.”
Two weeks ago, a far-right rally and counter-demonstration by anti-fascist protesters in the city of Portland, Oregon passed with no major incident amid a heavy police presence.
Super Happy Fun America’s website says Saturday’s march was designed to “spread awareness of issues impacting straights.”
It quotes the group’s president, John Hugo, as describing heterosexuals as “an oppressed majority.”
Massachusetts was the first US state to legalize same-sex marriage.
But the parade had a clear political slant too, as participants walked alongside pro-Trump floats. The group’s website displays a doctored photo of Trump holding a sign saying #GreatToBeStraight.
A “Straight Pride” rally held the previous weekend in Modesto, California attracted only a few dozen people and about 250 counter-protesters, according to local newspaper The Modesto Bee.

Lampard takes social media to task after Zouma abuse

August 31, 2019 0
Frank Lampard refused to single out individuals for blame after his Chelsea side let a two-goal lead slip to be held 2-2 by Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
But the former England and Chelsea midfielder was unsparing in his criticism of social media platforms on which his defender Kurt Zouma was the victim of racist abuse after his late own goal cost Chelsea two points.
“We have to look at social media and the platforms and give them some accountability, to actually have people registered who can be chased down for it,” Lampard said.
“I think it’s simple. Until we get to that, however horrible the conversation is, we are all going to get tired talking about it because if there’s no culpability then anyone can say anything to anyone.
“I don’t care if it’s racism, it could be homophobia, sexism -– if we allow it then it’s out there and it has to be dealt with.
“I think we have plans (to meet companies). Everyone knows where we want to go with it and not just with our players, any player.”
Lampard is still waiting for his first win at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea manager after his side blew a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at home to Sheffield United on Saturday.
Lampard’s faith in Tammy Abraham was again rewarded as his two opportunist strikes had Chelsea well on course for the three points at half-time.

– ‘It was a plus last week’ –

But the early matches of the season have raised more questions about Chelsea’s defence than their attack, and that was the case again.
United levelled with goals at either end of the second half from Callum Robinson and Zouma’s own goal.
Some had identified Zouma as the weak link after the 4-0 defeat away to Manchester United but here Lampard chose to keep Zouma and replace Andreas Christensen with Fikayo Tomori, 21, who played for him on loan at Derby County last season.
The result was Chelsea’s youngest-ever starting XI in a Premier League match.
But Lampard refused to blame the youth of his team or individuals.
“It’s not defence, it’s conceding as a team,” he said.
“There was a lack of concentration and mistakes at moments for the goals but you defend as a team as much as you attack as a team.
“We conceded because we switched off in a game we should be comfortably seeing out, and that is no disrespect to Sheffield United.
“2-0 was not the end of the story and I was clear on that with the players at half time.
“The first goal was disappointing because that allowed (the comeback) but we only have ourselves as a group to look at, not individually.”
He also denied that he was concerned about the defenders he has at his disposal.
“I wouldn’t say I’m worried,” he said.
“Antonio Rudiger is fit again after the international break so he gives me another choice.
“But as I said before, we can isolate goals and talk about centre backs but I trust completely the four centre backs that I have.
“We’re just at a moment now when we obviously need to stop conceding so many goals.
“I couldn’t care less that we’ve got our youngest team in Premier League history.
“It was a plus last week and I don’t think it relates at all.”

Naira Marley slams at Twitter users who think ‘he’s an illiterate’

August 31, 2019 0
Azeez Fashola, Nigerian singer better known as Naira Marley, has vented his annoyance at some social media users, who, according to him, keep questioning his intellect.
It appears some Twitter users have been getting on his nerves in recent times and Marley seems to have had enough of the bashing.
During an Instagram live session on Friday, the ‘Soapy’ singer is heard spilling out derogatory words at his “critics”. He also boasted about making A(s) while schooling in England.
“Some are on Twitter saying, ‘this is not Naira Marley tweeting or why is Naira Marley tweeting this? Are you f*****g stupid? Do you think I’m a fucking illiterate fam? Are you f*****g stupid, you f*****g d******d,” he ranted.
“I’m a f*****g A-star student that f*****g went to school in f*****g England. You think my f*****g twenty years in England was for what fam? Are you insane? Stop f*****g telling me nonsense bruv, I’m not a f*****g illiterate like you, you f*****g stupid idiot.”
The controversial singer is not one to shy away from confronting those who drag him. Even celebrities are not spared from his verbal onslaught once provoked.
In May, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned him before a federal high court in Lagos on 11-count fraud offence.
Marley was arrested by the anti-graft agency with respect to cybercrime popularly known as ‘yahoo yahoo’. He, however, denied wrongdoings.
The singer was granted bail of N2 million on May 30, but had to spend some time in prison custody pending when he would perfect his bail conditions.
He secured his release from jail in June.

Account of Twitter CEO hacked for 20 minutes

August 31, 2019 0
A hacker group with the name Chuckle Squad on Friday compromised the account of Jack Dorsey, chief executive officer (CEO) of Twitter, microblogging and social networking service.
According to CNN, the attackers oversaw the activities of the account for about 20 minutes.
Shortly after the takeover, the account (@jack) started to release a flurry of racial slurs, antisemitic messages, posts that supported Nazi Germany and some offensive tweets – which have all been deleted as of the time this report was filled.
Following minutes of erratic tweets, Twitter immediately took control of the account and confirmed that someone had hacked it.
It also attributed the fault for the hack to Dorsey’s mobile phone company.
“We’re aware that @jack was compromised and investigating what happened. The phone number associated with the account was compromised due to a security oversight by the mobile provider,” the company wrote.
“This allowed an unauthorized person to compose and send tweets via text message from the phone number. That issue is now resolved.”
The account is now secure, and there is no indication that Twitter's systems have been compromised.

The Chuckling Squad, which claimed to be behind the takeover of Dorsey’s account, have had their handle suspended by Twitter.
It is believed that the hack was possible by what is known as a “simswap attack”, “simswapping” or “simjacking”.
The technique is said to have occurred when an existing phone number is transferred to a new sim card, usually after the attackers may have paid or tricked a carrier employee or customer support staff at a mobile provider.
This is not the first time Dorsey will be having his account hijacked by hackers.

In 2016, ‘OurMine’, a security firm took over his account and sent out message about “testing your security.”
