The president of the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) has confirmed that the South Americans have shown interest in hiring Pep Guardiola as the replacement for Jorge Sampaoli. The former manager was sacked after Argentina failed to impress at the 2018 World Cup, leaving the tournament in the round of 16.
“We looked into hiring Guardiola,” admitted AFA president Claudio Tapia. “But it’s very difficult … you have to have a fat wallet. We had to mortgage the AFA to pay him … and maybe even then it wouldn’t be enough. We knew it was expensive but we did not think it was that much.” Guardiola has a deal until the summer of 2021 with Manchester City.
Tapia also confirmed that the two-time world champions are considering to hire a big name this time around, though Guardiola is the only manager that they have been looking into. “We are surely going to talk to (Diego) Simeone, (Marcelo) Gallardo, (Mauricio) Pochettino and others that the board propose.”
