Businessman docked for stabbing police officer with broken bottle

On Thursday, 34-year-old businessman, Steven Olarenwaju, was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stabbing a police inspector with a broken bottle.

A resident of Jankara area of Lagos State, Olarenwaju, is facing a charge of assault.

Police Prosecutor, Godwin Awase told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 6 at Alagbado area of Lagos.

He said that Olanrewaju unlawfully assaulted Inspector Abiodun Aigbogun, by stabbing him with a broken bottle in his
head and face when he (Aigbogun) tried to stop Olarenwaju from beating up a tricycle driver.

“The complainant got to the scene to make peace between the two parties, when the accused transferred his aggression on the officer for daring to stop him from beating up the driver,” he said.

Awase said the accused also pushed the complainant into the gutter which caused him to dislocate his ankle.

Olanrewaju, who faces a seven-year jail term if found guilty, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs F.F George, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

George adjourned the case until May 7 for mention.
