Troops, Boko Haram clash, NAF destroys ISWAP camp

February 24, 2019 0
The Nigerian Army on Saturday confirmed an attack on a military outpost by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Geidam area of Yobe State during  the presidential and National Assembly elections.
However, the  army  said  there was no casualty, adding that the development did not affect  the polls in the area.
In a statement, the  acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col Sagir Musa,  who insisted  Boko Haram did not  attack Maiduguri,  said a large number of voters in Geidam “turned out to cast their votes without any hindrance”.
Musa said, “There is no report of attack on Maiduguri or its neighbouring communities.
“The gunfire was not targeted at the public but was for security calculations.”
He added, “Similarly, a futile attack on a security outpost in Geidam general area in Yobe State has been recorded. We don’t have any casualty.”
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force says   the  Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole has destroyed an Islamic State in  West Africa Province terrorists’ camp at Zanari,  Borno State.
The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, stated that air strikes were carried out following  intelligence reports that the terrorists  were using  the settlement as a staging area to  launch attacks against the army.
Daramola said, “A NAF Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance platform conducted  a surveillance over the area and observed a considerable terrorist activities in the settlement.
“It therefore called for the scrambling of two Alpha Jets to attack the camp in successive strikes resulting in the destruction of several structures as well as the neutralisation of the  ISWAP occupants.”

Residents flee as Boko Haram take over Borno communities

December 31, 2018 0
There has been mass movement of people out of communities in Borno State through Damaturu the Yobe State capital to Bauchi, Gombe, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kebbi and Jigawa states.
Residents told our correspondent, the Boko Haram insurgents, who attacked some communities in Borno, were targeting soldiers.
Boko Haram had last week overran Baga, Doron-Baga, Kross Kawwa, Bunduran, Kekeno and Kukawa towns of Borno State after three days of intense fighting.
Mallam Bukar Kachalla and Mr. Abacha Musa told one of our correspondents on the phone on Monday that since late Saturday there has been a mass movement of people through Dapchi and Damaturu to other neigbouring states like Jigawa, Kebbi, Bauchi, Zamfara and Gombe.
Abacha said, “Baga is a big fishing community and people from other states especially Hausas used to stay there for fishing business, but following the attack on Baga and other towns, hundreds of people have been fleeing the area.
“One of those who fled, Mallam Isa Haruna said the Boko Haram fighters who invaded Baga were friendly and even prayed in the mosque together.
“They were not concerned about us,  the civilians, but their targets were the soldiers.”
Abacha noted that those fleeing the towns in Borno under Boko Haram control have lamented the hardship facing them as they have to trek miles before getting vehicles to Damaturu.
On his part, Mallam Bukar Kachalla who wondered why Boko Harm usually becomes fierce towards elections said dozens of people have been fleeing Borno since Saturday.
He called on the international community to help dislodge Boko Haram from the northeast for the peace and security of the region.

Local hunters ‘chase Boko Haram fighters’ from Yobe town

December 31, 2018 0
Suspected Boko Haram fighters who invaded Buni- Gari, a town in Yobe state, got more than they bargained for when some hunters engaged them in a fierce battle on Sunday.
A resident of the town who disclosed this to TheCable said the insurgents struck around 5pm.
He said though soldiers were not on ground when the attack was launched, the hunters succeeded in forcing the insurgents to beat a retreat.
Another source said though the insurgents have been sent out of the town, Buni-Gari has been deserted.
“Many have fled to nearby Buni-Yadi over the fear that Boko Haram members might regroup and launch a deadlier attack,” he said.
“Buni-Yadi is more secure than Buni-Gari. There are soldiers there.”
This attack comes two days after Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation, said Boko Haram has not struck outside Borno since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office in 2015.
TheCable fact checked his claim and found it incorrect.
There has been a resurgence in Boko Haram attacks of late. The insurgents have raided different communities in the north-east, killing people and rendering many homeless.

Boko Haram kills two people near Chibok

December 25, 2018 0
Boko Haram jihadists killed two people in a village near the northeast Nigerian town of Chibok, where more than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped four years ago, residents said Monday.
They said gunmen loyal to longtime Boko Haram faction leader Abubakar Shekau invaded the village of Sulima Kalama late Sunday and shot dead two people before setting homes on fire.
“They burnt four houses and looted a drug store before leaving the village,” Ayuba Alamson, a community leader in Chibok, told AFP.
Resident Samson Damina said many fled to nearby villages and Chibok, 25 kilometres (12 miles) away.
He said the jihadists came from the group’s Sambisa forest stronghold.
Since the April 2014 abduction of the schoolgirls, insurgents have repeatedly attacked Chibok and nearby villages.
In October the Islamists attacked Mifah village, seven kilometres from Chibok, killing two residents and burning the entire village after looting food and livestock.
The nine-year Boko Haram insurgency has killed 27,000 people and displaced two million more, creating a dire humanitarian crisis.
The conflict has spilled over into Nigeria’s northern neighbours Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

Boko Haram attacks Chibok village again

December 24, 2018 0
Boko Haram insurgents are currently attacking Makalama, a village in Gatamwarwa ward, Chibok local government area of Borno state.
This is coming barely two months after the insurgents attacked Mifa, also in Chibok, killing the village head.
“They came in this night (Sunday) through the nearby deserted Gogumdi village,” a Chibok resident told TheCable.
“They started shooting and people have been running to the bushes. Our troops here at 117 task force battalion are getting set to move in now,” he added.
Makalama is about 21 kilometres away from Chibok town.
“Most of the villagers are farmers who are in the harvest period. The insurgents came in and started shooting and when villagers ran inside the bush, they started looting their stores,” another Chibok resident told TheCable.
Sani Usman, army spokesman, told TheCable that troops have responded to the attack.
He said: “Yes, there was reported presence of suspected armed men in a village called Makalama, about 23 km from Chibok in which troops have responded. However, I will investigate further.”
Although the military is intensifying its effort in fighting the insurgents, Abubakar Elkanemi, shehu of Borno, in November said the people of the state are still under Boko Haram siege.

Centre rates Buhari, military on fight against Boko Haram

December 20, 2018 0
President Muhammdu Buhari and the Nigerian military have been patted on the back for their concerted efforts towards ending terrorism in Nigeria.
This is just as latest report has scored the military high on human rights compliance in its war against insurgency.
Professor Ahmed Danfulani, Chancellor, Centre for International and Strategic Studies (CISS), gave the verdict on Wednesday, at the presentation of five year report on the war against terrorism in Nigeria.
The report, which covered the period between 2013 and 2018, specifically hailed them for ensuring professionalism in the conduct of operational issues.
It also noted a wave of accountability in the finances of the military, successful rescue of hostages without harm, among other achievements.
Danfulani, while presenting the report, commended the current regime led by President Buhari and the military for rebuilding the confidence of the people in standing against the atrocities of Boko Haram.
Part of the report reads:
There are certain fundamentals about reports. They document what has happened, what is happening and can also predict what will happen. Reports are in a sense history being documented with objectivity. They can reveal to us what is being done right, what is in need of improvement and what can be done differently.
These are positive attributes of reports. But in the contemporary world, reports are also being weaponized.
Reports have become active ingredients in the manufacture of consent, escalation of dissent, brainwashing entire generations and in so doing perverting history.
It is not surprising to have witnessed in recent years incidents of reports being released to make terrorists appear as saints and soldiers fighting them to appear like losers.
Entities that are part of the problem can easily pretend to be the solution under this arrangement.
Nigeria is the practical instance of how reports are manipulated to distort history.

This happens because the body of reports on the country’s war on terrorism have largely been foreign often with intents that cannot be verified for sincerity hence the loss of objectivity.
The resulting subjectivity is not just an opposite of objectivity but has proven to be costly to the country and those fighting to liberate if from terrorists.
Events are recounted from the viewpoint of interests that see Nigeria as a means to an end and not a sovereign entity whose territorial integrity and aspirations must be respected.
The report being presented today therefore sets out present facts about the war on terrorism in their pristine form, untainted by any vested interest. The facts have been painstakingly collated over the said period so that there is a control to the myriad of other reports.
The implication of this is that Nigerians, indeed the world, now has a benchmark for assessing other reports. It is a matter of treating what is being presented here today as the master against which to verify other reports that can be treated as copies.

Shehu of Borno to Buhari: We are still under Boko Haram siege

November 30, 2018 0
The Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Elkanemi, has revealed that the people of the state are still under Boko Haram siege, despite claims to the contrary.
Elkanemi said this when President Muhammadu Buhari paid him a courtesy call at his palace in Shehuri, Maiduguri, reports TheCable.
The monarch dismissed claims by security operatives that the ongoing military operations, particularly in some parts of the state and the Lake Chad region, was yielding a positive result.
He said, “On behalf of the traditional institution in Borno, I want to commend Your Excellency for the commitment you have given towards ending the lingering crisis of Boko Haram.
“It is unfortunate that despite all efforts put in place to restore peace in our land and the north-east, we the people of Borno state are still under Boko Haram siege.
“Nobody can dare move out of Maiduguri by 10 kilometres without being confronted, attacked by Boko Haram.
“Quite a number of farmers are being killed and kidnapped on a daily basis around Molai General Area, which is just 10 kilometres away from the metropolis, along Maiduguri -Damboa -Biu road.
“Most of the surrounding villages and communities in Konduga, Damboa, Mafa and other local government areas have been razed down in the last two weeks.
“We plead that the federal government and the security agencies review the strategies in nipping this lingering crisis in the bud.”

Hon. Kazaure urges Buhari to appoint him to ‘finish’ Boko Haram

November 27, 2018 0
A member of the House of Representatives from Jigawa State, Mr Gudaji Kazaure, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint him as head of a task force to kill Boko Haram insurgents.
In a video trending online, the 46-year-old said he was a professional hunter who was familiar with all the bushes occupied by terrorists.
He said, “Let the President appoint me. I will delegate a team to go inside the bushes with myself to finish those idiots (terrorists).
“I’m a hunter, I know all these bushes. I’m a professional hunter; I can delegate a team of hunters.
“Let the government give us the army and the police, we will go inside that bush. I will lead it, I will lead.”
Kazaure, a member of the All Progressives Congress, is known for making sensational statements.
In March 2018, he said on the floor of the House that if women were given too much opportunity, they would eventually overthrow men.
His latest statement was in response to the killing of over 100 soldiers last Monday by Boko Haram insurgents in Metele, Borno State.
A faction of the sect known as Islamic State West Africa had attacked the 157 Task Force Battalion in Metele, firing rocket-propelled grenades, leading to the massacre of the soldiers.
See video as shared by Twitter user, Turaki Hassan:

NAF neutralises Boko Haram in Talala, Borno

November 10, 2018 0
Related imageThe Nigerian Air Force says the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole has neutralised several Boko Haram terrorists in airstrikes it conducted at Talala in Borno State.
Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, who disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, said the operation was carried out on Friday.
Daramola said the operation was carried out following credible intelligence reports that BHTs appeared to have relocated some of their fighters from the fringes of Lake Chad in Northern Borno to establish new camps along the Talala-Ajigin-Buk axis of the state.
“Series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions confirmed the presence of a significant number of BHT fighters residing in makeshift shelters, camouflaged under thick vegetation on the outskirts of Talala.
“As a result, ATF dispatched two Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet aircraft to attack the Camp in multiple waves, leading to the destruction of some of the structures and killing of several BHTs,’’ he said.
The spokesman said the NAF, working in concert with surface forces, would sustain the tempo of operation in order to destroy all remnants of the terrorists in Borno.

Boko Haram insurgents are currently raiding Mifa, a village in Chibok local government area of Borno state.
Mifa, eight kilometres away from Chibok town, is the last settlement which shares a border with the dreaded Sambisa forest.
A Chibok resident told reporters that the insurgents are currently setting houses ablaze in the community.
“They came in from the forest some minutes ago. They are currently burning houses,” the resident said.
A military source also confirmed the attack, saying security operatives are preparing to storm the town.
“Troops are yet to move in but they are trying to mobilise,” the source said.
The source later said soldiers had moved into the village but that the insurgents had killed some people, including the village head, before they got there.
“The troops have moved into Mifa but Bila Vwa, the village head, had been killed before we got there,” he said.
The source said most of the villagers had fled and now hiding in the bushes.
The attack is coming a week after the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a faction of Boko Haram, executed Hauwa Leman, an aid worker with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) who had been held captive.
In April 2014, the insurgents had attacked Chibok, abducting over 200 school girls at the Government Girls’ College. Some of the girls have been rescued, but 113 are still being held captive by the insurgents.

Abdulamalik Biu, acting general officer commanding (GOC) 7 division of the Nigerian army, said the insurgents attacked a group of persons scavenging for leftover farm produce and killed two of them.
Biu disclosed that the troops deployed to the area rushed to the scene when one of the female victims reported to them.
The commander said he had visited the scene of the attack to appraise the situation, adding that normalcy had been restored to the area.

Rachel Hassan, a witness, said about a dozen insurgents armed with weapons attacked them while working in the farm in the afternoon.
Recounting her ordeal, Hassan said the insurgents separated females from the males and requested them to go home.
“I hired somebody, a displaced person residing at the Bakassi internally displaced persons (IDPs), to work in my farm,” Hassan said.
“The insurgents came and gathered us in one place, they asked women to go and macheted the males,” she recounted.”
Hassan said some of the corpses were cut to pieces, adding that she reported the case to the GRA police station.
