Champions League Last-16 draw: Liverpool, Tottenham & Man Utd given tough opponents

December 17, 2018 0
Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham and Manchester City have discovered their fate after the draw for the last-16 of the Champions League was conducted this morning.
Liverpool booked their place in the last-16 thanks to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Napoli at Anfield last week. The win secured second place in Group C behind Paris Saint-Germain and Jurgen Klopp’s men have now been drawn to face German giants Bayern Munich.
Manchester United also finished second in their group with the Red Devils having to settle for the runners-up spot behind Juventus in Group H after losing their final game to Valencia last week. Jose Mouriho’s side have now been drawn to face PSG in the next stage of the competition and it will be a big task for United to reach the quarter finals.
Manchester City made light work of the group stages of the Champions League as the Premier League champions finished five points clear of Lyon at the top Group F and they’ve been rewarded by getting Schalke in the last-16. Pep Guardiola will be pleased with that draw and no doubt City will be the red hot favourites to progress.
Tottenham ensured all four English sides made it through to the knockout stages after drawing 1-1 at Barcelona last week and with Inter Milan failing to beat PSV at the San Siro, Mauricio Pochettino’s men snatched second place. The north Londoners have been drawn to face Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund in the last-16 and it’s sure to be an exciting double-header between two attacking sides.
It’s fair to say we have some huge matches to look forward to in February and March next year. Liverpool, Spurs and United have all got difficult tasks ahead of them but City should breeze in to the last-8 of the Champions League.
Here is the full draw:

Champions League: All the teams that have qualified

November 28, 2018 0
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich put aside their domestic worries to impress on the European stage and qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champions League on Tuesday.
Manchester United, Manchester City, Roma, Ajax and Juventus also advanced to the last 16 with one game to spare.
Madrid beat Roma 2-0 in Rome to secure first place, while Bayern crushed Benfica 5-1 at home.
Despite its home defeat, Roma also advanced from Group G, with both teams knowing they were through following Viktoria Plzen’s earlier 2-1 win at CSKA Moscow.
City again struggled against Lyon and needed the 83rd-minute equalizer from Sergio Aguero to salvage a 2-2 draw in Group F and seal its spot in the knockout stage.
Ajax also moved into the last 16 for the first time in 12 years with a 2-0 win over 10-man AEK Athens, in a game marred by fan violence.

Mourinho takes swipe at Rashford after late Manchester United win over Young Boys

November 28, 2018 0
Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho has taken a swipe at Marcus Rashford over his lack of goals during United’s dramatic 1-0 win over Young Boys.
The Portuguese cut the sight of a concerned figure on the touchline throughout the match, and was visibly dismayed at an early missed opportunity from the 21-year-old forward.
Rashford attempted to chip the goalkeeper but sent the ball over the bar, which saw his manager shake his head and made vexed gestures.
And while he was satisfied with the efforts of the youngster, the former Chelsea boss couldn’t resist pointing out Rashford’s error.
When asked if he was happy with what Rashford has brought to the team, Metro UK quoted Mourinho as saying, “But the most important thing, which is a goal.
“Goals win matches. I’m happy with the intensity the boy has put into the game.
“I’m happy with the way we started, that was exactly our intention. It’s not easy with the boys to cope with the frustration and pressure of a result that doesn’t suit us. Obviously the most important thing is to qualify.”
While he was frustrated with Rashford’s lack of goals, he refused to criticise the England international for his early missed opportunity.
“More than just one chance,” he said, adding that: “We had what I call half chances a lot.
“When a winger has the ball 20 metres to attack the defender by the box who has the fear of a penalty, he has to beat a defender one against one at least once. It’s not the point to blame at least one player.”

Ronaldo makes history in Juventus’ 1-0 win over Valencia

November 28, 2018 0
Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, on Tuesday night made history in his side’s 1-0 victory over Valencia in the Champions League encounter.
The 33-year-old showed off his skills to set up fellow teammate, Mario Mandžukić, who scored the only goal of the match to ensure Max Allegri’s men defeated the La Liga side.
According to Juventus, Ronaldo became the first ever player to win 100 Champions League matches in the history of the Europe topflight league competition following his side’s victory.
The Serie A champions took to their official Twitter page, @juventusfcen, to make the announcement.
“@Cristiano becomes the first ever player to reach 100 @ChampionsLeague wins #CR7JUVE #UCL #JuveVCF,” Juventus tweeted.
Ronaldo won 26 Champions League games during his time at Manchester United.
He also won 71 Champions League games when he was playing for Real Madrid and three with Juventus to make it 100 wins.
The Portuguese captain will hope to lead Juve to victory when they tackle Fiorentina this weekend in the Serie A fixture.

Klopp says Liverpool have only themselves to blame for Napoli defeat

October 04, 2018 0
Image result for Klopp says Liverpool have only themselves to blame for Napoli defeat
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said his side could only blame themselves after the last year’s Champions League runners-up were overrun by Napoli before Lorenzo Insigne’s late winner gave the Italians a 1-0 win to go top of Group C on Wednesday.

“We were not good enough and if you are not good enough, you’ll lose and that happened to us tonight. That’s it,” said Klopp.

“Napoli made a really good game, we didn’t, and that’s why they deserve the three points.”

Lorenzo Insigne scored after 90 minutes in a game Napoli dominated from the start with substitute Dries Mertens also rattling the crossbar.

The hosts had the better chances throughout as Insigne, Jose Callejon, Fabian Ruiz and Arkadiusz Milik all threatened under-pressure Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis — who hired three-time Champions League winning coach Carlo Ancelotti this season in place of Maurizio Sarri — hailed the success at their Stadio San Paolo.

“Big win against a great team! Ancelotti worthy of his fame,” wrote De Laurentiis on Twitter.

Last season Napoli’s style of football under Sarri impressed against Manchester City but the team lost 4-2 at home before exiting the competition in the group stage.

Insigne’s winner ensures they are top of Group C with four points, one more than Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.

“I think we timed it well,” said former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach Ancelotti.

“If Mertens had scored a few minutes earlier, it would’ve been more time suffering.

“We interpreted the game well. We had an extra central defender and were able to build the game from the back. There was a perfect balance.”

Napoli needed a win on Wednesday after their opening match ended 0-0 at Red Star Belgrade.

Liverpool, meanwhile, played as if they would settle for a point after they beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-2.

The Reds’ strike force of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were a shadow of the trio who terrorised Europe last season, with Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina not called upon for a single save.

Liverpool’s best effort came when Egyptian Salah shot wide after the break.

“It’s always a bad sign if you have to say your goalkeeper was your best player, but that was obvious tonight,” said Klopp.

“The first half was kind of OK, but second half was not good enough.

“Obviously no attempt on target (for us) … I don’t remember when that happened last. I am really fine to give the credit to Napoli, but I think we had a big part in it as well.”

Liverpool were also handicapped by an injury to Guinean midfielder Naby Keita inside the first 20 minutes.

“We had prepared the match well,” said Ancelotti, “then it’s all about the performance and the guys played it well and we were rewarded with this victory that keeps us in the group.

“The team did well throughout the game, we never lost control, were always very focused, above all when defending and allowed Liverpool practically nothing.”
Liverpool’s Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum said it was a “reality check” before next Sunday’s Premier League top-of-the-table clash with Manchester City.

“We have three days to recover and then we will face Man City,” added German Klopp.

“It would have been difficult at any time in the season. Now, let’s have a look afterwards, how the players are, what happened in the game, injury-wise, little knocks and stuff like that. Then we will prepare for Sunday.

“Then we have our crowd in the back. You could see tonight, Napoli used the atmosphere and we couldn’t calm it down with our performance.

“But on Sunday that –- at least — will be 100 percent different.”

Neymar scores hat-trick as PSG thrash hapless Red Star

October 03, 2018 0
Neymar continued his return to top form with a hat-trick in a sublime display to lead Paris Saint-Germain to a 6-1 rout of Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The world’s most expensive player admitted on the eve of this game that he still did not feel back to 100 percent after the foot injury which required surgery and saw him miss the last three months of last season.
But he tore a hapless Red Star apart with two goals in the space of two first-half minutes at the Parc des Princes, the first a delightful curling free-kick, before completing his hat-trick from another stunning free-kick late on.
Edinson Cavani, Angel di Maria and Kylian Mbappe also scored as PSG bounced back from a 3-2 defeat at Liverpool two weeks ago to register their first points in Group C.
They have a double-header to come next against Napoli, and the Italian side will surely offer a sterner test than Red Star, the 1991 European Cup winners who had been unbeaten in 34 games before arriving at the Parc des Princes and being utterly outclassed.
The Serbians grabbed a consolation goal through Marko Marin in the second half, but they could not cope with the home side’s front four, a quartet who cost PSG almost 530 million euros ($610 million) in transfer fees alone.
Such was the imbalance between the teams that PSG were never likely to be troubled despite playing this game with one end of the Parc des Princes closed, a punishment following incidents in the defeat against Real Madrid back in March.
Neymar had already drawn plenty of attention from opponents before he won the free-kick which led to the opening goal in the 20th minute, the Brazilian getting up to curl a fine strike past Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan from 25 yards.
The French league leaders scored again two minutes later as Neymar found Mbappe before meeting the return pass with a lovely cushioned finish.
That was Neymar’s ninth goal in nine games this season between Ligue 1 and Champions League.
The former Barcelona forward may not yet be back to the same level as before his injury, but he certainly looks in the mood again, with his performance here also notable for a brilliant nutmeg on Milos Degenek that created another shooting opportunity just before half-time.
PSG had already scored twice more by that point, with Cavani finding the net on 37 minutes with the aid of a deflection after some brilliant footwork and Di Maria guiding a Thomas Meunier cross past Borjan in the 41st minute.
Neymar produced some more magic in the build-up to PSG’s fifth goal 20 minutes from the end, finding Juan Bernat, who squared for Mbappe to get his name on the scoresheet.
Red Star supporters were given something to celebrate as Marin, the former German international winger whose career lost its way after a move to Chelsea, blasted into the roof of the net for a consolation goal in the 74th minute.
But Neymar had the last word, curling another free-kick high into the net to complete his hat-trick nine minutes from time, taking him into double figures for the season.
PSG coach Thomas Tuchel then immediately substituted his star player, who walked off to a standing ovation.

UEFA to discipline Man Utd over late arrival

October 03, 2018 0
Image result for UEFA to discipline Man Utd over late arrival
UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Manchester United after their late arrival at Old Trafford forced a late kick-off in their Champions League group match against Valencia.
United were held to a scoreless draw by the Spaniards on Tuesday, heaping further pressure on Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho.
The club now faces UEFA sanctions after their “late team arrival” infringed competition regulations and the ensuing “late kick-off” went against disciplinary regulations, according to a brief statement issued by European football’s ruling body.
The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on 18 October.
United, who have failed to win their last four home matches in all competitions, are already nine points adrift of rivals Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the English Premier League.

Modric reveals reason Madrid lost to CSKA Moscow

October 03, 2018 0

Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric, has insisted the club is not in crisis, following their shock 1-0 loss to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League.

Madrid succumbed to a second-minute goal from Nikola Vlasic on Tuesday, as the defending champions crashed to a second defeat in three games.

They also failed to score for the third successive match in all competitions for the first time since January 2007.

Pressure is mounting on head coach Julen Lopetegui but Modric, who started off the bench on Tuesday, is adamant Madrid will arrest their slump.

“It’s not a crisis but we haven’t been performing the way we should.

“No doubt, we’ll get back to winning ways.

“As for tonight, CSKA showed they are very well organised and have really good players.

“They used their chance, we didn’t use ours,” Modric told reporters in the mixed zone.

Dybala grabs hat-trick as Juventus ease past Young Boys

October 02, 2018 0
Paulo Dybala scored a hat-trick as Juventus carried their winning streak into the Champions League with a 3-0 victory over ten-man Young Boys on Tuesday to leave them top of Group H with six points from two games.
Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo was suspended after his contested red card during the Italian side’s 2-0 win over Valencia in the first round of games.
But Dybala ran riot in his first European game this season, volleying in his first following a Leonardo Bonucci long ball after five minutes.
The Argentine doubled his account on 33 minutes when he picked up a rebound from a Blaise Matuidi shot, with Juan Cuadrado setting Dybala up for his third on 69 minutes.
The Swiss played the final quarter of an hour a man down after Guinean centre-back Mohamed Ali Camara was sent off for a second yellow card.
It was the Young Boys’s second defeat of the competition after they lost their opener 3-0 at home to Manchester United.

Kane wants to emulate Messi's goal feats

October 02, 2018 0
Image result for Kane wants to emulate Messi's goal feats
Harry Kane has set his sights on emulating the incredible goal-scoring feats of Lionel Messi as the Tottenham striker prepares for his shoot-out with the Barcelona legend.
Kane and Messi will be the leading men at Wembley on Wednesday when Tottenham host Barcelona in a crucial Champions League clash.
Messi has already scored eight times this season, including a hat-trick in Barca’s European demolition of PSV Eindhoven, taking his career tally for the club to well over 500 goals.
Kane has been prolific for Tottenham over the last four years, but he admits he needs to become even more ruthless with his finishing to approach the jaw-dropping statistics compiled by the Argentina forward.
“He set the standard, he and Cristiano Ronaldo have gone above the normal standard, when they are scoring 50 or 60 goals a season,” Kane said on Tuesday.
“As a striker I want to try and match that. He’s definitely set the standard for the rest of us and he still is.
“It motivates me to get even better and improve and hopefully one day score as many, if not more, than he has.
“It’s a great test for us. As players you want to play against the best in the world and Messi is certainly that, a fantastic player, and we will do our best to stop him.”
Tottenham lost their opening European game at Inter Milan, leaving the Premier League side with no margin for error as they try to qualify for the knockout stages.
If Mauricio Pochettino’s side are to make it to the last 16, a victory over Spanish champions Barcelona would be a major boost.
And to achieve that goal, they will need England captain Kane at his lethal best.
Kane, who finished as the World Cup’s top scorer earlier this year, is back in form, with three goals in his last two games after a lethargic start to the season.
Barca have wobbled domestically of late, with two draws and a defeat, to bottom side Leganes, in their last three matches.
Hoping to add to Barca’s problems, Kane says Tottenham will draw on the memories of last season’s stunning 3-1 Wembley win over Real Madrid in the Champions League group stages.
“We got off to a great start last season, beating Dortmund at home. It was not so great to lose to Inter this time around,” Kane said.
“We’ve got to prove we can beat the best teams in the world and we need to do that against Barcelona.
“Barcelona might play better than Real Madrid did last season. We need to produce that same energy, the crowd were amazing that night.
“If we can get them on their feet as soon as possible, create some chances and take one or two it would put us in a great position.
“We went through a stage where we didn’t win in three matches and maybe a bit of pressure starts to build.
“I’m sure Barcelona want to bounce back but it’s our chance to stop them and win four games in a row, which would be great momentum for us.”
Spurs will have to take on Barcelona without Christian Eriksen, Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen, who have joined Dele Alli on a growing casualty list.
“It is a period when we are not having good luck with injuries,” Pochettino said.
“We are not victims though. We must feel strong. Every player must feel they can win and achieve what we want.”

Hugo Lloris ready for Barcelona visit

October 02, 2018 0
Image result for Hugo Lloris ready for Barcelona visit
France’s World Cup winning captain Hugo Lloris offered Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino a little ray of sunshine amid an injury crisis on the eve of their Champions League clash with Barcelona.
Lloris returned to training having recovered from a thigh injury, that has seen him on the sidelines since the end of August, but Belgian duo Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele, and Danish star Christian Eriksen have been ruled out of the game because of hamstring, thigh and abdomen injuries respectively.
England midfielder Dele Alli and Ivory Coast defender Serge Aurier are also unavailable because of hamstring and thigh problems.
The quintet will also not be fit for the Premier League match with struggling Cardiff on Saturday.
“Hugo Lloris has returned to training and is available for selection ahead of Wednesday night’s mouth-watering Champions League clash with Barcelona,” read a club statement on their website.
“Ruled out are Dele Alli (hamstring), Serge Aurier (thigh), Mousa Dembele (thigh), Christian Eriksen (abdomen) and Jan Vertonghen (hamstring).
“The quintet will not be available before the international break.”
Their absences couldn’t have come at a worse time.
Pochettino’s side can ill afford a damaging defeat against the Spanish champions after conceding two late goals to lose their opening Group B match 2-1 at Inter Milan.

Guardiola: Manchester City playing five finals in Europe

October 01, 2018 0
Image result for Guardiola: Manchester City playing five finals in Europe
Pep Guardiola says his Manchester City side effectively face the first of “five finals” in the Champions League group stages at Hoffenheim on Tuesday following defeat in their opening game.
City’s 2-1 loss to Lyon in Manchester a fortnight ago meant they arrived in Germany desperate for a win over Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, who are hosting their first ever Champions League home match.
“We have five finals now. We lost the first game, so now we must win each one  — tomorrow is the first final,” Guardiola said when asked about the Lyon defeat.
“Maybe we need to suffer a bit.
“It (the Champions League) is a top quality level competition, each team is so good and it makes things complicated.
“We weren’t so good against Lyon in the first half.
“Since I have been here, we have always qualified comfortably (for the knock-out stages) and maybe this shows what a tough competition it is.”
Kevin de Bruyne trained with the City team before they left Manchester on Monday, for the first time since suffering a knee injury in August, but the Hoffenheim game comes too soon for the Belgium playmaker.
Guardiola will be back on the touchline again after serving a ban for the Lyon game following his sending off in last season’s quarter-final defeat to Liverpool.
“I prefer to be on closer to my players, rather than in the stands,” he said at a press conference in Heidelberg, neat Hoffenheim.
The Spaniard poured praise on opposite number Julian Nagelsmann, 31, the youngest coach in Champions League history, who counts Guardiola as one his inspirations.
Nagelsmann took charge aged just 29 in February 2016 and has steered Hoffenheim from the brink of relegation to the Champions League inside two years.
“We are in contact through other people, I am really impressed, he took over Hoffenheim in a bad situation and every year he is getting better,” said Guardiola.
“Tomorrow is the first time his team will face mine and I am looking forward to it.
“He is only 31 and already managing a team in a good competition, I am happy to see a manager of his quality to produce some nice football and he will have a good career.”

Bale ruled out of Real Madrid's Champions League trip to Moscow

Image result for Bale ruled out of Real Madrid's Champions League trip to Moscow
Gareth Bale has been left out of Real Madrid’s squad to face CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Bale picked up a thigh injury during the goalless draw with Atletico Madrid on Saturday and had to come off at half-time.
He will miss the reigning European champions’ Group G game in Russia, along with captain Sergio Ramos, who was also omitted from the squad announced on Sunday.
Ramos sustained a cut above his eye against Atletico but, despite briefly leaving the field for treatment, was able to complete the match.
Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui said after the game Bale had been replaced as a “precaution” at the Santiago Bernabeu and the Welshman would be assessed on Sunday.
The club will be hoping the damage is not serious, with a crunch match against Barcelona in La Liga approaching on October 28.
Marcelo and Isco were also absentees from Madrid’s squad to face CSKA. Marcelo has a calf problem while Isco is recovering from an appendix operation.

VAR to make UCL debut next season

September 27, 2018 0
Image result for VAR to make UCL debut next season
Video assistant referee (VAR) will be introduced in the Champions League and other UEFA competitions from the 2019/20 season.
The decision was reached on Thursday at a meeting of UEFA’s executive committee in Nyon, Switzerland.
According to UEFA, the VAR system will be used from the play-off stage of the Champions League while it will also be used for the 2019 UEFA Super Cup as well as EURO 2020.
There are plans to also extend its use to the Europa League from the 2020/21 season.
Several controversial incidents have marred high-profile matches in Europe’s premier club competitions in recent years, including games between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich last season, thereby increasing calls for the VAR system to be introduced.
Reacting to the decision taken by the technical meeting, UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin said he hopes the introduction of VAR would improve the efficiency of refereeing.
“We are confident that introducing Video Assistant Referees in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient and successful implementation of VAR in the UEFA Champions League, the world’s flagship club competition,” he said.
The VAR system was initially trialled in the US and was first used during an official game in Australia’s A-league in April 2017.
The referee assistant system came to the fore at the 2018 World Cup where it was used in 335 incidents with a 99.3 percent success rate.

It is presently being adopted in four major European leagues.
