Account of Twitter CEO hacked for 20 minutes

August 31, 2019 0
A hacker group with the name Chuckle Squad on Friday compromised the account of Jack Dorsey, chief executive officer (CEO) of Twitter, microblogging and social networking service.
According to CNN, the attackers oversaw the activities of the account for about 20 minutes.
Shortly after the takeover, the account (@jack) started to release a flurry of racial slurs, antisemitic messages, posts that supported Nazi Germany and some offensive tweets – which have all been deleted as of the time this report was filled.
Following minutes of erratic tweets, Twitter immediately took control of the account and confirmed that someone had hacked it.
It also attributed the fault for the hack to Dorsey’s mobile phone company.
“We’re aware that @jack was compromised and investigating what happened. The phone number associated with the account was compromised due to a security oversight by the mobile provider,” the company wrote.
“This allowed an unauthorized person to compose and send tweets via text message from the phone number. That issue is now resolved.”
The account is now secure, and there is no indication that Twitter's systems have been compromised.

.@Jack’s account has been hacked.

The Tweets are coming from a source called Cloudhopper. Cloudhopper was the name of the company Twitter acquired a long time ago to help bolster their SMS service.

Looks like the hackers are Tweeting via the old SMS service...

The Chuckling Squad, which claimed to be behind the takeover of Dorsey’s account, have had their handle suspended by Twitter.
It is believed that the hack was possible by what is known as a “simswap attack”, “simswapping” or “simjacking”.
The technique is said to have occurred when an existing phone number is transferred to a new sim card, usually after the attackers may have paid or tricked a carrier employee or customer support staff at a mobile provider.
This is not the first time Dorsey will be having his account hijacked by hackers.

In 2016, ‘OurMine’, a security firm took over his account and sent out message about “testing your security.”

NCC green lights trial of 5G in Nigeria

August 28, 2019 0
The executive vice-chairman of the  Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Umar Danbatta, says the regulatory agency has greenlit the spectrum for the country’s trial of 5G services.
He spoke on Tuesday at the opening of the first digital Africa week organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Abuja.
According to him, the agency has negotiated the counterpart funding for the infrastructure companies to implement the technology.
He also said the NCC has constituted a broadband implementation monitoring committee (BIMC) to oversee the actualization of the project within a four-year implementation plan in line with a declaration made by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Nigeria has not only achieved but exceeded the 30% penetration target set by the National Broadband Plan (NBP) (2013 – 2018) and at the end of June 2019, our broadband penetration stood at 33.31%,” Danbatta said.
“With the development of Smart Cities Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) by the ITU, it is imperative to have a pervasive and ubiquitous broadband infrastructure across all our towns and cities to achieve the objectives of making them Smart.
“The NCC will continue to drive and implement policies, projects, and programmes aimed at facilitating digital revolution and digital inclusion in Nigeria. In this regard, we have approved spectrum for the trial of 5G services in the country.”
According to him, 26GHz, 38GHz, and 42GHz spectrums have been assigned for use in the rollout of the advanced technology and the NCC’s framework would also aid the deployment of internet of things (IoT) devices and smart services in the country.

Android Q is now Android 10

August 22, 2019 0
Dims?resize=2000%2C2000%2Cshrink&image_uri=https%3A%2F%2Fs.yimg%2Fos%2Fcreatr Uploaded Images%2F2019 08%2Fc07a35a0 C4da 11e9 Bfb1 E51903646d46&client=a1acac3e1b3290917d92&signature=79a159f31e7b64be224799810f6bd85029a0ebd0
Google has finally revealed Android Q's release name, and it's not Quiche, Quinoa or Quesadilla. In fact, it's not named after any dessert that starts with the letter Q at all -- the tech giant has decided to simply call it Android 10. In a blog post, the company said it's changing the way it names its releases altogether in a push for greater accessibility. "[W]e've heard feedback over the years that the names weren't always understood by everyone in the global community," the company wrote.
Since L and R aren't always distinguishable when spoken in some languages, for instance, it's not immediately obvious for some people that Android Lollipop came after KitKat. The names of some previous Android versions aren't known desserts in certain parts of the world either. In other words, while the names are fun, they don't always resonate with users. The new scheme sounds much less quirky and delicious, but it'll likely serve Google's purpose: come up with more relatable and intuitive names. "[W]e think that at version 10 and 2.5 billion active devices," the blog post reads, "it was time to make this change."
In addition to changing the way it names Android versions, Google has also updated the mobile platform's logo. It changed the text from green to black to make it easier to read, switched fonts and used a close-up of the Android robot that's now colored in a new shade of green.

Apple offers $1m reward to anyone who can hack an iPhone

August 09, 2019 0
American multinational tech company, Apple, is offering the sum of $1 million to anyone who can hack into their iPhones and tell the company how they did it.
The iOS bug bounty was announced by Ivan Krstić, Apple’s head of security engineering and architecture, at the annual Black Hat hacker convention in Las Vegas on Thursday.
The new bounty, which was first reported by Forbes, promises to pay the said amount for a single attack technique that a researcher discovers and shares discreetly with Apple.
The bug bounty, reported to be the highest ever offered by any tech company, would be open to all researchers in the fall as against Apple’s previous practice of restricting it to an invite-only list of firms.
While the full $1 million will be given to those who hack the kernel, the core of iOS, with zero clicks required by the owner of the device, another $500,000 will go to those who find a “network attack requiring no user interaction.”
Additionally, the tech giant also staked a 50 percent bonus for hackers who find vulnerabilities in its software before release.
This also extends to all of Apple’s platforms including iOS, iCloud, tvOS, iPadOS, watchOS, macOS and Apple TV operating systems with smaller rewards available for similar tasks
Apple’s upping the ante for its bug bounty program comes in the wake of a growing private market where hackers sell information on glitches in these devices to governments for vast sums.

Huawei launches own operating system to replace Android

August 09, 2019 0
Chinese telecommunication giantHuawei, says it has launched HongmengOS, its own operating system, known in English as the HarmonyOS.
The launch comes as the telecom giant faces the threat of losing access to Google’s Android system in the wake of the escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and China.
Richard Yu, the multinational technology company’s CEO, disclosed this on Friday while speaking at the Huawei Developer Conference which held in the Chinese city of Dongguan.
According to Yu, the OS would be used across a variety of devices like smart speakers, smartphones, sensors, televisions, wearables, laptops, car head units, and other “smart screen devices”.
It would first launch in China and, thereafter, be made available to the global market as part of the firm’s expansionist strategies because of the lack of clarity on the ban placed on its smartphones with respect to the use of Android OS.
“If you’re asking when we will apply this to smartphones, we can do it anytime. If we can’t use Android in the future, we can immediately switch to the Harmony OS,” he said.
Yu said the OS would be released as an open-source platform worldwide to encourage widespread adoption and create a shared ecosystem across devices of various sorts.
“You can develop your apps once, then flexibly deploy them across a range of different devices,” he said.
According to him, the first version of Harmony would launch later this year in its “smart screen” but would be extended across other devices over the next three years.
A modularized can be nested to adapt flexibly to any device to create a seamless cross-device experience. Developed via the distributed capability kit, it builds the foundation of a shared developer ecosystem

The new development comes after Google, US multinational tech giant, imposed restrictions on Huawei smartphones with respect to the use of its Android OS “in compliance with an order” from Donald Trump, US president.
Trump had blacklisted the company and expressed doubt about the security of its 5G network technology which he claimed potentially enabled the Chinese government spy on the United States.

Google builds gesture controls into new Pixel phone

July 30, 2019 0
Google on Monday revealed that it is building gesture controls and face recognition into a next-generation Pixel smartphone as it looks to fuel early enthusiasm for its upcoming flagship handset.
The Pixel 4 is expected to make its debut in October, along with a new iPhone as competitors strive to win or keep fans in the competitive, cooling smartphone market.
The two new Pixel features teased by Google were billed as representing a “next step” in the internet giant’s vision for a future in which computing power is available anywhere when people want without having to think about it.
Alphabet-owned Google said the key technology would center around its motion-sensing radar called “Soli.”
“Pixel 4 will be the first device with Soli, powering our new motion sense features to allow you to skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence phone calls, just by waving your hand,” Pixel product manager Brandon Barbello said in an online post.
“These capabilities are just the start, and just as Pixels get better over time, motion sense will evolve as well.”
Google’s advanced technology and projects team has worked on Soli, a motion-sending radar, for the past five years, according to Barbello.
Along with recognizing hand gestures, Soli will cue facial recognition sensors when a Pixel 4 is picked up to allow devices to automatically unlock for their owners.
“Face unlock uses facial recognition technology that is processed on your device, so that image data never leaves your phone,” Barbello said.
“The images used for face unlock are never saved or shared with other Google services.”
Soli sensor data is also kept on smartphones and not shared with other Google services, according to Barbello.
Google, Apple and other smartphone rivals typically launch new premium models ahead of the year-end holiday shopping season. A Samsung event in early August is expected to reveal its new Note handset.

Google introduces Nigerian accent, informal transit routes

July 26, 2019 0
American multinational tech giant, Google, has introduced Nigerian accent to the assistant on its web mapping service in its quest for localization.
The feature, which was unveiled in Lagos at the Google for Nigeria event, comes alongside the introduction of some other services. It also represents the first attempt by the tech company to offer such services in Africa.
The search engine also unveiled new Street View imagery, Gallery Go, Google Go updates, Google Lens and Bolo, and a Nigerian culinary experience from Google Arts and Culture.
Following this development, commuters going through Nigeria can now choose to hear travel advice on Google Map in a local accent/voice.
More detailed transport features for motorcycle riders have also been introduced, the availability of which would commence with Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic, Rwanda, and Uganda.
Speaking at the event, Jeff Albertson, a Google senior product manager who worked on the development, said the company partnered with an indigenous firm to gather data.
“What we’re really hoping is for people who might be making a trip to an unfamiliar town, maybe a journey they don’t usually take, to be able to discover the info they need to make that journey,” he said.
There are indications that the map would also include details pertaining to the expected freight, travel duration and images of bus stops to help guide both private and commercial commuters.
This includes details on “informal transit” routes which would allow users to play virtually every known road like commercial minibuses travelling local neighbourhoods do.
