Nigerian students bag gold medal at SAGE competition in US

August 29, 2019 0
A group of Nigerian students has bagged a gold medal at the 2019 Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) competition, for their problem-solving project ‘Marist Air Quality Monitor’.
SAGE is a transnational social movement that emphasizes civic duty and responsibility among high school students who are then made to form teams and develop socially responsible businesses to compete in a global competition.
The Nigerian students, from Marist College in Abuja, vied for the ultimate prize alongside students from around the globe at the 2019 competition with their device that monitors air quality and detects harmful environments.

The students’ device reportedly utilizes various sensors, a microprocessor, and a platform to detect elevated levels of harmful particles and chemicals in the air and then quickly triggers an alarm or warning phone calls.
“The Marist-AQM is set to inspire positive change in Nigeria, across Africa and beyond as it provides an opportunity for healthier lives and promotes wellbeing for all at all ages. MARIST-AQM also provides much-needed air quality data to various stakeholders,” said Romanus Ayeh, coordinator of the team.
“My team and I had the opportunity to showcase our project and defend our country. We did great and won a Gold medal for our project and we are all happy. The experience is worth reliving and I am glad to have partaken in it.’”
While speaking on the award, Ifeanyi Mgeabu, principal of the school, said that he would ensure the institution embarks on mass production for commercialization.
The competition held in California between August 8 and 12; saw the high school students compete with those from China, Canada, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Vietnam, among others; and witnessed the vetting of many equally impressive projects.

NECO releases results of June/July 2019 exam

August 27, 2019 0
The National Examinations Council (NECO) has posted the results of the 2019 June/July Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
The NECO acting registrar, Abubakar Gana, announced the release at the council headquarters in Minna, Niger state capital, on Tuesday.
According to him, about 829,787 candidates — representing 71.59 percent — made five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
This is just as 1,041,986 candidates — representing 89.90 percent — made five credits and above, irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.
While a total of 1,163,194 candidates registered for the 2019 edition of the exam, 1,151,016 candidates, including 146 blind applicants sat for the SSCE, which is conducted for students in their final year in secondary school.
Gana disclosed that about 40,630 candidates — representing 3.53 percent — were involved in various forms of malpractice. He added that the rate of malpractice cases doubled for this year when compared to 2018.
The council also recommended three schools in Kastina, Kebbi and Oyo states for de-recognition from conducting its exam for two years.
The schools, according to him, were involved in alleged mass cheating and special centre cases.
“Arising from the above, three schools one each in Katsina, Kebbi and Oyo states were recommended for de-recognition for two years for their involvement in Mass cheating/whole centre cases,” he said.
“Also, a total of eighteen supervisors were blacklisted for various offenses ranging from poor supervision, aiding and abetting, connivance with non-candidates and so on.
“In line with council’s zero tolerance for any form of examination malpractice, members of staff alleged to have behaved contrary to expectations are to face appropriate disciplinary measures once they fail to satisfactorily defend themselves.”
The acting registrar deemed the 2019 June/July SSCE to be a huge success, stating that the council has “once again delivered on its mandate.”

Kwara gov mourns 17 admission seekers

August 25, 2019 0

Kwara state governor, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, has commiserated with the families of 17 university admission seekers in the state who recently lost their lives in an auto crash.
The deceased students had been aboard an 18-seater Toyota Hiace passenger bus when their vehicle rammed into a DAF container truck along the Ilorin/Jebba/Mokwa highway on Thursday.
They were returning home from Kano when the tragedy struck.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor’s chief press secretary, AbdulRazaq sent his condolences to their families, describing the incident as preventable.
The governor also prayed that such tragedy would be averted in future.
“We believe that we can avoid this calamity in the future. We reiterate our calls on the drivers to always check their speed, respect other road users, and put their vehicles in the best condition. Most accidents occur because our drivers often fail these three basic tests of safe driving,” the statement read.
“Besides, we call on our tertiary institutions which still require students to travel long distances for their post-UTME examination to please consider holding such test online to avert the necessity of travel.
“This will not only reduce travel and attendant risks but also encourage students to embrace and excel in computer literacy, a sine qua non for success in the 21st century.”
Udeme Eshiet, head of operations at the state command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said the deceased had been taken to the mortuary while two others who only sustained injuries were hospitalized.

Lecturers may go on strike soon

August 23, 2019 0
COEASU1
President of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, Mr. Nuhu Ogirima, on Friday, disclosed that the union may soon commence another strike action to press home its demands from the Federal Government.
Ogirima made the disclosure in an interview with reporters in Abuja on Friday while commenting on the five-day warning strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU).
According to him, COEASU may have no option than to down tools, due to FG's failure to fulfill the promise made to the union, which prompted it to suspend the strike action embarked upon for over two months in December last year.
"We are also warming up now to embark on strike. The Federal Government has acceded to the demands of the universities at the expense of another sister sector.
"What we require is just about one-tenth of what the universities require. But the federal government left us out completely, refusing to attend to the resolutions we had.
"They promise to release funds in December, they have abandoned that. And now they have even listened to NASU and SSANU, in addition to what they have done for their academic staff, ASUU. In our own case, they have not done anything about it.
"It is unfortunate because they choose to attend to the elitist institution. They left us out because nobody wants to be a teacher; we don't have the children of ministers, traditional rulers and the ambassadors in our system. That is why it is so neglected.
"And this is destroying our education foundational system. The future of the education industry is clearly the colleges of education. If we do not have colleges of education, what happens to the education of our youths, of our young ones?" Ogirima asked.
The COEASU helmsman said the union has been holdings meetings which, according to him, would continue next week and a final decision to be taken after due consultation with members.
He said: "We are consulting with our people towards the possibility of another strike action because the promise of N15b made, nothing has been done about that. There is another N2.5b. The N2.5b is about the peculiar academic allowances. That of universities is earned academic allowances. Our own is peculiar academic allowances. And it is just N2.5b that is outstanding now for 2018. That of 2017 is not up to that and they have not done anything about it too."
On the reappointment of Mallam Adamu Adamu as Minister of Education, Ogirima described it as a welcome development, hoping that he would work hard this time around to find ways of offering solutions to the plethora of challenges confronting the education sector.

Five Nigerian schoolgirls create app to finance poor children's education

August 19, 2019 0
A group of five Nigerian schoolgirls known as team ‘Brain Squad’ have created an application that would help finance the education of poor children “across the world”.
The members of the group include Jadesola Kassim, Munachiso Chigbo, Pandora Onyedire, Ayomikun Ariyo and Ivana Mordi.
The girls, whose ages range between 10 and 11, are from Standard Bearers School, Lekki Phase 1, in Lagos.
They represented the country at the 2019 Technovation World Pitch summit, which held on August 15, 2019, in California, after creating an app called ‘Handsout’ which sources funds and educational materials from people around the world and gives them to children who can’t afford them.
Five Nigerian girls from Standard Bearers School in Lagos competed in this year’s Technovation World Pitch Summit in California, USA. They created an app called “Handsout” to help finance the education of indigent children. Well Done!

3,063 people are talking about this
According to them, the collapse of a building that houses a primary school, which led to the death of many young children in March 2019, was what inspired them to develop the app.
“On 16th of March 2019, the tragic news of a building which had a primary school within at Itafaji Lagos collapsed. Many children died and others were injured,” they were quoted to have said.
“The community was thrown into morning and the surviving children can’t understand why friends and relatives had to die. They need hope.”
The Technovation World Pitch summit will help them network, refine their proposal, and pitch their app in order to make a positive impact in their local communities.

African varsities sell certificates to unqualified Nigerians – NYSC

July 26, 2019 0
The National Youth Service Corps has met with the registrars of 159 foreign universities in Africa, accusing some of these institutions of selling their certificates for between N300,000 and N500,000 each to unqualified Nigerians.
These unqualified Nigerians, the NYSC added, were thereafter sent in by these corps-producing institutions to participate in the one-year national service.
The NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, said this in Abuja on Thursday at a meeting with the registrars of these foreign institutions.
He said henceforth only graduates whose academic certificates were authenticated by the Nigerian consulates in those countries of study would be accepted for national service.
The theme of the meeting was, “Strategies for a successful mobilisation of Nigerian foreign graduates: The role of stakeholders.”
Giving the breakdown of these African-based universities, Ibrahim said 60 of them were based in Republic of Benin, 15 in Cameroon, two in Chad, Ghana 41, Guinea five institutions while four were based in Ivory Coast.
Other universities, he said, were based in Niger, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Togo.
The NYSC DG said, “We have observed in recent years that the quality of graduates presenting themselves for mobilisation for the national service from foreign institutions, especially in Africa, did not meet the needed manpower quality to actualise our national dream.
“In recent times, there has been an upsurge in the number of graduates who cannot defend their degree certificates. Some tertiary institutions simply sell their degree/ Higher National Diploma certificates to persons who never passed through any academic rigour.
“We have evidence of persons who possess originals of such certificates and transcripts from some universities that are represented here.
“We have reliably been informed that such certificates and transcripts cost between N300,000 and N500,000.
“In order to check this ugly trend of certificate racketeering, we strongly recommend that the Federal Ministry of Education should liaise with the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure that all degree and HND certificates obtained outside the shores of Nigeria are authenticated at the Nigerian consulate in the country of study.
“Therefore, with effect from the 2019 Batch C service year, only graduates whose academic certificates are authenticated by the Nigerian consulates in these countries of study will be accepted for national service. Furthermore, all institutions found culpable in the sale of degree certificates will be blacklisted.”
Ibrahim also identified unaccredited courses, extortion of money from students for NYSC mobilization process and inconsistencies in the features of certificates and transcripts as some of the challenges which the foreign institutions had to work on to avoid being blacklisted by the NYSC.
Meanwhile, the NYSC management has hailed the courage of a corps member, Onisuru Oghenetega, who was abducted in Anambra State during the February 23 polls in the state.

It’s sad some Cotonou varsities present fake graduates for mobilisation - NYSC DG

July 17, 2019 0
The director-general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Shuaibu Ibrahim, has kicked against some unnamed universities in Cotonou, Benin Republic, which according to him, present unqualified persons for mobilisation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Adenike Adeyemi, NYSC director, press and public relations, Ibrahim said the scheme has commenced investigations into the activities of such universities.
“It is unfortunate that some institutions of higher learning, particularly in Cotonou, Benin Republic, present to us people who didn’t go through the four walls of the university as graduates for NYSC mobilization,” he said.
“We are presently investigating some of such so-called graduates, many of whom cannot write or spell any word in English.”
The statement added that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has promised to work with the scheme in combating fraudulent mobilisation of unqualified graduates for national service.
Adeyemi said Ibrahim Magu, the EFCC acting chairman, made the pledge when he paid him a courtesy visit in his office recently at EFCC headquarters, Abuja.
She added that Magu condemned the activities of unpatriotic Nigerians who brought shame to the country through their desperate quest for wealth, including sale of academic qualifications to unqualified graduates.
The acting chairman of the anti-graft agency then promised to collaborate with the NYSC to checkmate illegal activities of such individuals.

JAMB to revalidate biometrics of candidates over last 10 years

July 08, 2019 0
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it will revalidate the biometrics of all candidates who have participated in its examination in the last 10 years.
This is contained in a statement by Fabian Benjamin, the board’s head, media, and information, in Lagos on Sunday.
According to the statement, the revalidation has become necessary in a bid to detect impersonation.
Benjamin said it had become a norm each year for the board to be flooded with applications for correction of data after its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
He said that the board had also vowed to make public the names of impostors in order to serve as a deterrent to others, as well as stem the antics of “professional examination takers”.
“This step is taken as a result of the huge number of applications recorded by the board, aimed at perfecting fraudulent acts that had aided impersonation in the first instance,” he said.
“It should be noted that the board had, in recent times, been inundated with series of complaints bordering on change of names, state of origin, local government, gender, date of birth, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and subject combination of candidates.
“The board, in its attempt to block all forms of examination malpractice, has discovered that one of the ways candidates employ is professional examination writers, who register using the candidate’s name and afterwards apply for correction of such details, along the lines listed above.
“To address thus ugly trend therefore, the board has resolved to revalidate the biometrics of candidates that had taken the board’s examination to fish out these impersonators and prosecute them along with their sponsors.”
Benjamin said that the board had discovered series of “unfortunate and pathetic situations”, into which some of the so-called elite schools had put some candidates.
He explained that in their (elite schools) bid to make money, they subject the candidates to group registration, after collecting huge sums of money from unsuspecting parents.
“Such group registration end up distorting candidates’ data,” Benjamin said.
“The public, therefore, should be mindful of some of these so-called elite schools, which exploit parents by collecting huge sums of money to register students in group, more often at unauthorised centres.
“The board’s examination is not a school-based examination, and therefore, does not require candidates’ registration in group.
“As such, all candidates, desiring to take the board’s examination are required to register individually and not in group.
“Similarly, the board urges some of these elite secondary schools which indulge in collecting money in bulk to register candidates to desist from such act or be held responsible for any misfortune that may befall such candidates.”

ASUU president urges FG to prioritize education

June 30, 2019 0
Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, National President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on governments at all levels to give priority attention to education.
Ogunyemi made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Awka.
He said since the return of democracy in Nigeria 20 years ago, successive governments had merely paid lips service to the education sector.
Ogunyemi noted that as a result of this, most Nigerian universities were ordinary caricatures to what ideal universities should be.
“Look at our budgets for education in the last five years at national; we have not gone beyond eight per cent such that in 2018, the sector was given seven per cent which was a far cry from what we need.
“Though we say that the Federal Government was not doing much, the state governments are even the worst culprits.
“The governors prefer awarding contracts in primaries and secondary schools rather than to pay counterpart fund to enable them access Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) funds.
“In 2017, a total of 17 states could not access their fund piling up in UBEC because they couldn’t pay their counterpart fund,” he said.
Ogunyemi said if things must work, governments had look into the education system and tackle the myriad of challenges plaguing the sector.
He insisted that numerous challenges bedeviling the country such as insecurity, unemployment, drug related offences, cultism and other socio-economic cum political challenges were due to poor attention to the education sector.
Ogunyemi who was in Awka to attend the valedictory lecture and book presentation by Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, Ikenna Onyido, used the occasion to appeal to the FG to release the 25 billion naira it agreed with ASUU in February.
“During last strike we embarked on, FG assured ASUU that it will pay N25 billion out of the whole lot Government was supposed to pay to the universities.
“Since February 17, that we entered the agreement with government and they said in two weeks time, this is three months now, nothing has happened”, he said.
The ASUU boss called on Nigerians to talk to the government on the matter, noting that his leadership of the union would not have the power to prevent its members from any action they want to take on the issue.

JAMB unveils new method of registration

June 29, 2019 0
72160f3a Jamb Logo
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says starting from 2020, candidates will register for its examinations with their National Identity Management Number (NIM) to solve the challenges of multiple registration.
Dr. Fabian Benjamin, Head of Media of the board made this known at a one-day capacity building workshop organised by the National Examination Council (NECO) for education correspondents in Keffi, Nasarawa on Friday.
Benjamin, who spoke on the topic: "Understanding Reporting in the 21st Century", said the development would be facilitated through partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
According to him, experience has shown that malpractice in the conduct of public examination, especially the UTME, actually begins with the registration exercise.
"Four days ago, we cancelled results of four candidates because of examination malpractices we discovered after the examination.
"The board is on top of the situation as it has the determination and technology in place to forestall attempts at compromising the registration process.
"An intrinsic part of the strategies adopted by the board is ensuring that its registration period is kept very short."
He said that the registration of candidates would now take 30 days instead of a longer period to contain the chances of fraudsters' strategies to circumvent the process.
Benjamin also appealed to parents to desist from encouraging their children to commit examination malpractices.
On biometric challenges, he said the board had planned to ensure that by 2020 the issues of biometric problems in the course of registration would be over.
"In 2018, we have about 24,490 biometric challenges but we have been able to bring this down to 22 in 2019; but if we are able to stand on our ground by 2020, we will not have any biometric challenges," he said.
He added that no Computer Based Test (CBT) centre would be used for the conduct of its examinations except those centre whose administrators were the owners of the CBT centres.
Speaking on the challenges of impersonations in examination, Benjamin said multiple registrations, if not checked, was an easy way to impersonate a candidate.
He noted that the board, in conforming to international best practices, would take care of people with special needs through the ICT capacity building and empowerment programme.

The app was launched at an event in Lagos.

He said the app will enhance the way people learn digitally and reduce bottlenecks associated with traditional education.
Listing other benefits, Salami said the app has interactive features and functionalities that would make learning and retention easier for students, thereby “eradicating failure in national examinations and colleges across the country and beyond”.

Wike abolishes WAEC, NECO fees in public secondary schools

June 25, 2019 0
State-owned primary and secondary schools in Rivers have been directed to stop collecting fees and levies from pupils and students with immediate effect.
Nyesom Wike, governor of the state, gave the directives on Monday during a meeting with the heads of primary and secondary schools, Senior Secondary Schools Board and Universal Basic Education Board at the government house in Port Harcourt.
He said that the abolition of all forms of fees and levies in public primary and secondary schools across the state was intended to create access to quality education.
He said the state government would be sending direct allocations to all primary and secondary schools management for their operations.
“From today henceforth, no child either in primary and secondary schools should pay fees and levies in any school across the state,” he said.
“The monies you collect from these children are just used for your personal purposes.
“If I hear that any school head collects any fees or levies, be they examination, NECO or WAEC fees, that school head would be sanctioned.
“We shall not only dismiss the school head who collects fees or levies, but we will also prosecute the person involved.
“Government will work out grants that will be sent to the schools for their regular management and operations.”
Wike directed the ministry of education, the Senior Secondary Schools Board and the Universal Basic Education Board to monitor all public schools across the state to ensure full compliance.
The governor also noted that his administration funded the salaries, allowances, examinations and equipment of all public schools.

He assured parents that his administration is committed to the provision of quality education and access to the less privileged.

JAMB kicks against establishment of new varsities

June 25, 2019 0
The registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Ishaq Oloyede, has called for the imposition of an embargo on the creation of new universities in Nigeria.
According to PUNCH, Oloyede made the call during his speech at the fourth convocation lecture of the Federal University, Dutse (FUD), which held on June 21, 2019.
The registrar, in the board’s weekly bulletin issued by Fabian Benjamin, its spokesman, called for the placement of an embargo on the establishment of new universities so that the country’s existing institutions could be adequately catered to.
“Since education is everybody’s business, all Nigerians should support the effort towards educational development. Universities should not be established just to boost the ego of rich individuals and politicians,” he said.
Reinstating the recommendations of the 2017 Presidential Retreat on Education, Oloyede also suggested an increment in annual budgetary allocation for universities to nothing less than 15 percent.
Based on the information by the National Universities Commissions (NUC), there are currently 43 federal universities, 48 state universities and 79 privately owned ones in Nigeria.
The exam body had earlier announced 160 and above as this year’s national minimum cut-off mark for admission into public universities.

FG tells schools to resume teaching of history

June 21, 2019 0
The federal government has directed that all primary and secondary schools in the country to resume the teaching of history as a standalone subject.
Sonny Echono, permanent secretary, ministry of education, disclosed this on Friday.
According to Echono, the directive has been given and it is automatic that all the schools would implement the directive simultaneously.
“By the next academic calendar, history will be taught as a standalone subject,” Echono said.
“It is with immediate implementation. So, definitely for the next academic year everybody will fall in line because we already articulated the curriculum and the examination should be done along those lines.”
Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate and Femi Kuti, Afrobeat musician, had advised the federal government not to consider history as just an academic exercise but as a need for the growth and development of Nigeria and the African continent.
