Senegal will be first African nation to host Youth Olympic Games

October 08, 2018 0

Senegal will host the 2022 Youth Olympic Games, the first African country to be given the nod.
According to the evaluation commission and the executive board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Senegal presented a visionary, ambitious and technically sound YOG proposal.
Thomas Bach, IOC president, said: “Africa is united behind Senegal to host the Youth Olympic Games 2022. With a young population and a passion for sport, it is time for Africa, it is time for Senegal.”
Macky Sall, Senegal President, commented on IOC’s decision, saying: “Senegal and its young people are proud of the honour you have bestowed upon us, in entrusting the organisation of the Youth Olympic Games 2022 to our country.
“In fact, it is the whole of Africa, the birthplace of humankind through its history and the youngest continent through its demographics, which will welcome the young athletes of the world in 2022.”
Sall said his government will build a 50,000-seat Olympic Stadium. Senegal will host the games in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.
The IOC said the games will be held in May or June, at the end of the dry season to “greatly reduce the prevalence of tropical diseases”.
The other bidders were Botswana, Nigeria and Tunisia.

Seun Adigun, a Nigerian bobsled pilot, has become the first ever African winter and summer Olympian.
Adigun led three other team members –Ngozi Onwumere, Akuoma Omeoga and Simi Adeagbo– to represent Nigeria at the 2017 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang County, South Korea.
According to Ayako Ito of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Olympic Study Centre has confirmed that Seun Adigun is the first ever African athlete from both male and female categories to compete in both Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
The African athlete is one of the athletes to be so recognized at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics; the second being Pita Taufatofua of Tonga, a taekwondoist turned skier.
Adigun represented Nigeria in athletics at the 2012 Summer Olympics and in bobsleigh at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
“This is a real-life example of what it means to represent African excellence and a true testament to the fact that impossible is nothing. This milestone is truly a blessing,” Adigun said.
“The preparations for the Winter Games was different in the sense that my passion was driven by my self-less intentions to create a positive representation for Nigerians and Africans, globally.

“That passion was accompanied by several thoughts of fear and anxiety, but it was overcome by God’s grace and the support of everyone who played a part in the journey, no matter how big or small.”
