Ihedioha wins Imo gov elections

March 12, 2019 0
The Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Emeka Ihedioha, has emerged the Imo State governor-elect.
He polled 273,404 votes to defeat 69 other candidates including his closest rival, Uche Nwosu of Action Alliance who scored 190,364 votes.
Announcing the results at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Owerri at exactly 10.08 pm on Monday, the state returning officer, Prof. Francis Otunta, said the All Progressives Grand Alliance candidate, Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, polled 114,676 followed by the All Progressives Congress candidate, Senator Hope Uzodimma, who scored 96,458 votes.
The Accord Party candidate, Ikedi Ohakim secured 6,864 votes.
He said, “We have been working since Saturday to elect a credible governor for Imo State. The total registered voters is 2,221,008; Accredited voters is 823,743.
“The total votes cast is 714,35; rejected votes 25,130;  total valid votes is 739,485.”
Declaring Ihedioha the winner of the polls, the returning officer said, “I, Francis Otunta, hereby certify that I am the returning officer for the Imo state elections. That the election was contested and the candidates received the following votes.
“Ihedioha Emeka of PDP, having satisfied the constitutional requirements, is hereby declared the winner.”
The PDP supporters burst out in wild celebrations as they sang and danced out of the hall.
Before the development, tension had heightened in the hall following the delay in the declaration of the election winner with fatigued party agents harassing the returning officers and his assistants.
The situation almost got out of hand when a state official was seen speaking with some of the electoral officers.
Angry party agents rallied against him, questioning the propriety of his action.
After the declaration of the winner, the agents signed the original result sheets.
But the AA governorship candidate rejected the results, insisting that there ought to be a rerun “because the PDP did not meet the constitutional requirements.”

Security concerns in Rivers as guber election approaches

March 08, 2019 0

Concerns about security may adversely affect voter turnout in Rivers State elections on Saturday.
This is following a build-up of tension and incidents of violence ahead of the polls.
The fallout of the February 23 presidential and National Assembly elections marred by widespread violence which claimed several lives could have also aggravated public fear.
“This is a state election involving more local actors with higher stakes,” said Oby Ukomadu, making a comparison between the February 23 polls and tomorrow’s. “So, this one will be more violent.”
“So, I will not be going out to vote for the love of my life,” added Mrs Ukomadi, a resident of Eliozu in Obio Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
Another resident, Ibim Donald, from Okirka LGA said she and her family would not go out to vote tomorrow – and “it is not because we don’t have PVC.”
Mrs Donald said: “It is because I love my life and I cannot risk my life because of anybody’s ambition.
“It is common that people will not go out to vote. It is because of what happened in the presidential election and what things that have been happening ahead of the one coming up tomorrow.”
She predicted that only partisans would be appearing for the polls.
“I spoke with my uncle and he said he would go vote because nobody could intimidate him; but you know he’s a party supporter and those are the only persons that may be going out (to vote),” she said.
Last weekend, two soldiers were shot at and killed by gunmen in Abonnema in Akuku Toru LGA, forcing families to flee over fears of reprisal by the army.
That incident happened just one week after the bloody Election Day violence which saw soldiers kill several persons after one of them was slain by gunmen in an ambush.
The army is yet to react to the last Saturday’s killing of two soldiers.
However, the Rivers State government and the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) have separately accused the army of violence and intimidation.
On Thursday, the state government, in a statement signed by the commissioner for information Emma Okah, said the transport minister and leader of the All Progressives Congress in the state, Rotimi Amaechi, and the army formation in Port Harcourt, (were) “masterminding the mass arrest of innocent Nigerians and PDP members in the state.”
The statement reads: “The essence of the arrests is to precipitate a crisis and cause the INEC to postpone the elections in Rivers State. Failing this, the Minister will use the vacuum created by the absence of arrested leaders and rig the governorship election and force a candidate of his choice against the will of the people.
“We have been saying it repeatedly that the Minister of Transportation has been commanding the army in Port Harcourt to do unprofessional things and the crisis are spreading.
“He has been boasting that he has brought soldiers from Sokoto and other states to carry out his political agenda of disrupting or rigging elections on Saturday.”
Mr Okah, however, did not list anybody already arrested by the army apart from mentioning that “a lot of prominent persons have been pencilled down for arrest.”
Also, the IYC said the army invaded the palace of Ateke Tom, ex-militant and now king of Okochiri Town in Rivers State.
“IYC cannot comprehend why the Ijaw people are made the scapegoat of the FG Government’s desperation in deploying the military to rig the elections? Only recently, on (the) 23rd of February, 2019, the Ijaw nation lost many of her promising youth to soldiers invasions in Rivers and Bayelsa states,” read a statement by Pereotubo Oweilaemi.
The army could not be reached for comments on this report.
The telephone line of Aminu Iliyasu, the spokesperson for the army formation in Port Harcourt, was unavailable at the time of filing this report.
An aide to Mr Amaechi, who asked not to be named, said the transport minister would speak on the allegations against him “later”.

Akinwunmi Ambode
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has given the assurance that adequate measures had been put in place to ensure a hitch-free exercise in the state during the governorship and House of Assembly elections on Saturday.
During a press briefing at the Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, on Wednesday, Ambode added that the peace and security of the state were paramount to his administration.
He said, “I want to assure all Lagosians of their safety and also to let everyone know that Lagos is a cosmopolitan state and it will remain so.
“The peace and security of this state are very paramount to this government and we would ensure that everybody that is eligible to vote goes out to do so. The security agencies have assured us that there would be peace across the nooks and crannies of Lagos.”
The governor, who is the Chairman of the State Executive Council, recalled the unfortunate incidents in some parts of the state during the Presidential and National Assembly elections, saying while such had been properly addressed, he would nonetheless want everybody to see each other as brothers.
Governor Ambode also clarified the news on social media to the effect that a public holiday had been declared for civil servants on Friday to prepare for the elections.
“We like to inform all Lagosians that contrary to what has been put in the media that there would be a public holiday on Friday, what we have actually done was to declare a mid-term holiday for students across all our schools in Lagos State,” he said.

Guber, Assembly Polls: Lagos govt assures voters of safety

March 06, 2019 0

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday urged eligible voters in the State to come out en-masse on Saturday to vote in the Governorship and House of Assembly elections, assuring that adequate measures have been firmed up to ensure a hitch-free exercise.
Addressing Government House Correspondents after a Special State Executive Council Meeting at the Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, on the forthcoming polls, the State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode said every necessary arrangement to ensure a smooth voting exercise had been made, adding that the peace and security of the State was paramount to his administration.
“I want to assure that we would try as much as possible to ensure that the coming elections – gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections go very well. We want to also assure all Lagosians of their safety and also to let everyone know that Lagos is a cosmopolitan State and it will remain so.
“The peace and security of this State is very paramount to this government and we would ensure that everybody that is eligible to vote goes out to do so and keep the peace.
“We encourage all voters to come out on Saturday; I want to encourage all Lagosians to exercise their rights so that we can have a large turnout. The security agencies have assured us that there would be peace across the nooks and crannies of Lagos,” he said
The Governor, who is the Chairman of the State Executive Council, recalled the unfortunate incidences in some parts of the State during the Presidential and National Assembly elections, saying while such had been properly addressed, he would nonetheless want everybody to see each other as brothers.
He also urged the people to support the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and all the House of Assembly candidates of the party to ensure continuity of good governance in the State.
According to him, “We are also very aware of the incidences that happened during the presidential election of which we have taken proper care of. We know that we are all brothers; we are all the same in this State but I urge everyone to support our government and also support our candidate because we believe in continuity in this government and that is why you see that the executive arm of government is in support of Jide Sanwo-Olu who is our flagbearer for the APC.
“We urge all Lagosians to vote for continuity and ensure that all our candidates for the House of Assembly elections also are voted for. I wish all of us a very successful voting process on Saturday and then we implore all our security agencies also to make sure that there is peace across the land.”
Besides, Governor Ambode who addressed the briefing alongside members of the State Executive Council, also clarified the news on social media to the effect that a public holiday had been declared for Civil Servants on Friday to prepare for the elections.
“We like to inform all Lagosians that contrary to what has been put in the media that there would be a public holiday on Friday, what we have actually done was to declare a midterm holiday for students across all our schools in Lagos State,” the Governor said.

Lagos Poll: How Igbos should vote – Ohaneze Ndigbo president

March 06, 2019 0
The president-general of the Igbo socio-political group, Ohaneze Ndigbo, John Nwodo, has distanced the body from the endorsement of the candidature of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as governor by the Lagos State chapter of the association.
The Lagos chapter of Ohaneze Ndigbo, led by Solomon Ogbonna on Monday announced it is backing Mr Sanwo-Olu, the candidate of the ruling party in the state, the All Progressives Congress, ahead of the governorship election on March 9.
According to Mr Ogbonna, the group is, in turn, seeking six slots in Mr Sanwo-Olu’s government if he is elected.
But in a recorded video sent to PREMIUM TIMES by Mr Nwodo on Tuesday, the Ohaneze leader condemned the action of the Lagos State chapter and told Igbos resident in Lagos that Mr Ogbonna does not have the support of the national body in their action.
“What he (Mr Ogbonna) did in Ohaneze’s name did not have our backing. We never asked him to pick who the Igbos will vote for in Lagos. He did it a terrible thing, don’t listen to him, listen to your hearts,” Mr Nwodo said in the video in which he spoke Igbo.
“Both Jimi Agbaje and (Babajide) Sanwo-Olu are good persons, whoever your heart accepts, please vote for him.”
It was not the first time the pan Igbo group is distancing itself from the action of its members.
Last January, some members of the group denied it had endorsed Atiku Abubakar after some of its members threw their weight behind the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate.
Mr Nwodo, however, urged the Igbos to vote for a candidate who supports the restructuring of the country.
“Our people that were chased away during the election, and those that were wounded, is any of them behind it? If any of them is behind it, don’t vote for him.
“The person who is threatening you with heavy taxation, that you will be told to leave, don’t listen to him. The end will justify the means. We have those who will stand for you in the courts, nobody will touch you.
“If you go to America today, a black man has been president. If you go to America today, the Igbos and Yorubas have become mayors. But it’s not their land. In the UK, both Igbos and Yorubas are members of parliament. Nobody asked them to leave. Whoever is telling you to leave is insane.”
Mr Nwodo, a former minister of information, said it was unfortunate that since the threat issued to the Igbos in Lagos, no leader in the country including the present and past ones in Lagos, had come out to condemn the threat.
“It’s very bad,” he said.
“The person going to cast a vote is like someone going to confess before a priest, only yourself and God and the priest knows what you said. Go there and do what’s in your heart.
“This vote will change the future of this country and the forthcoming generation, don’t play with it. The first election is yet to be concluded, but this second one will show that anywhere that was rigged in the first one will be exposed in this one. But if you refuse to come out, it will be difficult to prove that you came out the first time. So it is important that you vote.
“If anyone threatens you, don’t run, stand so he knows a man is facing him. But don’t attack.”
Mr Sanwo-Olu seeks to succeed outgoing Lagos governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who lost in the APC primaries. His closest challenger is Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party who is believed to enjoy the support of Igbos resident in Lagos.

INEC declares Imo North senatorial election inconclusive

February 26, 2019 0
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday declared the senatorial election in Imo North inconclusive.
This came two days after the INEC office in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area in the senatorial district was set ablaze by persons suspected to be political thugs.
Allegations of snatching of ballot boxes, kidnapping of electoral officers and manipulation of the process had trailed the process.
An INEC office who does not want his name in print told our correspondent that glaring cases of malpractices made the electoral umpire to declare the exercise inconclusive.
He said that fresh election shall be held in three out of the six LGAs that make up the senatorial district.
The INEC official listed the affected LGAs as Isiala Mbano, Ihitte Uboma, and Obowo.
According to him, the election shall equally be conducted in six polling units in Okigwe and Onuimo LGAs.
