Anthony Joshua's camp warns Andy Ruiz Jr

August 14, 2019 0
Anthony Joshua Vs Andy Ruiz Jr 1
Anthony Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn has made it clear to Andy Ruiz Jr that their rematch will absolutely take place in Saudi Arabia.
Ruiz had claimed in an Instagram post that the second fight with Joshua will be on "my terms" and "in the United States".
Joshua invoked a rematch clause which was part of Ruiz Jr's original contract for their first fight on June 1 after he lost his IBF, WBA and WBO belts to the Mexican.
Hearns insists that as a result, details of the rematch do not need to be agreed in fresh negotiations.
"The contract for the rematch was signed prior to the first fight.
"They are both signed at the same time. There is no other contract.
"We have to let [Ruiz Jr] know the time, date and venue which we have done. That's it.
"They are contractually bound for the rematch.
"There are no conversations between the two teams about not doing the fight. I don't perceive a problem.
"He signed a contract with us that he was absolutely over the moon with, that gave him the opportunity of a lifetime. He will 100 per cent honour that contract.
"His choice is to have a legal battle that could put him out of boxing for years, or to defend his belts for a lot of money against a guy he has already beaten. There isn't any doubt he will take the fight," Hearn told Sky Sports.

Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz: Rematch confirmed after boxers signed contracts

August 12, 2019 0
Anthony Joshua Vs Andy Ruiz Jr 1
Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn has confirmed that both Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz Jr have signed contracts for a rematch.
Just last week, Ruiz refused to sign off on the rematch with Joshua unless he gets a much higher purse.
The Mexican is supposed to get around $9million (£7.5m) to fight Joshua in December but apparently wanted "significantly" more before he agrees to the bout.
But all is now set for the rematch for the IBF, WBA and WBO titles in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia on December 7.
"There will be press conferences in Saudi Arabia, London and New York with the fighters ahead of the rematch. Full details will come in due course.
"I can confirm that both fighters have signed for this return fight.
"In terms of the undercard, expect the very best from us. So many fighters want to be part of this iconic event.
"To fight fans, this will be an experience you will never, ever forget," Hearn told Sky Sports.

Klitschko rejects comeback fight against Joshua

January 16, 2019 0
Former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has dismissed speculation that he could make a comeback to the ring and rematch Anthony Joshua as “an early April fool’s day joke.”
Klitschko, 42, retired from boxing after he was knocked out by WBA-WBO-IBF champion Joshua at Wembley Stadium in 2017. The Ukrainian was also defeated by Joshua’s countryman Tyson Fury in his previous fight in 2015.
With uncertainty surrounding the heavyweight division and the immediate futures of Joshua, Fury and Deontay Wilder, Klitschko said he had been sent messages by fans urging him to return.
Fury and Wilder are expected to fight a rematch at a U.S. venue in the first half of 2019, leaving Joshua in need of an opponent to fill his April 13 fight at Wembley.
But despite suggesting that he feels he would still be able to compete at the highest level, Klitschko quickly rejected talk that he could come out of retirement any time soon.
“I’m all about challenges in life and I do really feel that I [have] still got it,” Klitschko posted on Twitter.
“Recently many of you contacted me willing to see me making a comeback to the ring this April and I’m thankful to y’all for that.
“However, I need to call such speculation an early April fool’s day joke.”
Joshua, 29, is expected to face London rival Dillian Whyte in April but has repeatedly said that securing a heavyweight unification bout with Wilder remains his No. 1 priority.

Joshua’s begging to fight me – Wilder claims

December 12, 2018 0
Deontay Wilder has goaded long-time rival Anthony Joshua by suggesting the IBF, WBA and WBO champion is now “begging” to fight him.
The American maintained his unbeaten record and kept his WBC strap after the split decision draw with Tyson Fury earlier this month despite being dominated for long stretches in Los Angeles.
A rematch between the two appears almost certain after the controversial nature of the result but Joshua, who as yet does not have a next opponent scheduled, has long been a target.
Wilder and Joshua have been in negotiations over a world title unification clash for some time with the Alabama-born fighter insisting Eddie Hearn and the rest of the Brit’s team are growing increasingly desperate.
“They’re definitely begging now. He’s trying to reach out all of a sudden,” he said on Joe Rogan’s podcast. “His management have been trying to reach out to mine as well.
“He could have had this opportunity, he had many opportunities; he could have fought Luis Ortiz, he could have fought me, he had a chance to fight (Tyson) Fury.
“But people want to know who’s the best, especially after seeing this Fury fight, and I’ve been trying to show people who is the best. I’m always going to say I’m the best until I’m defeated.”
The WBC have sanctioned a rematch between Wilder and Fury but Hearn insists the American should choose to fight his man next instead.
“The WBC thing is totally irrelevant and shame on any reporter that reported it as ‘The WBC order a rematch’ because they haven’t ordered a rematch,” he said.
“They’ve said they’ll sanction a rematch. There is a mandatory due and that’s Dominic Breazeale and they’re basically saying they would approve this fight – ‘we encourage it and we would sanction it, we basically give it our blessing.’”

Tyson Fury opens up on struggle with depression

October 27, 2018 0
Image result for Tyson Fury opens up on struggle with depression
British boxer Tyson Fury has revealed that suffering from depression meant he “wanted to die so bad”.
The 30-year-old, who faces Deontay Wilder for the American’s World Boxing Council heavyweight title in Los Angeles on December 1, also had problems with drug addiction and alcoholism.
Fury told video podcast The Joe Rogan Experience: “I would start thinking these crazy thoughts.
“I bought a brand new Ferrari convertible in the summer of 2016. I was in it on the highway and at the bottom, I got the car up to 190mph and heading towards a bridge.
“I didn’t care about nothing. I just wanted to die so bad. I gave up on life, but as I was heading to the bridge I heard a voice saying, ‘No, don’t do this Tyson, think about your kids, your family, your sons and daughter growing up without a dad.'”
Fury said his life had become unstable following a shock win over Wladmir Klitschko in Dusseldorf in 2015 that saw him crowned the World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Organisation heavyweight champion.
“I’d wake up and think, ‘Why did I wake up this morning?’ he said. “And this is coming from a man who won everything. Money, fame, glory, titles, a wife, family and kids — everything.”
A prolonged period away from the ring saw Fury lose his titles although he still regards himself as the “lineal champion” having not been beaten in the ring.
Fury added he had sought professional medical help but that it was his religious belief that had enabled him to resume his boxing career.
“I was out at Halloween in 2017 dressed as a skeleton, but I was 29 and everyone was younger and I thought, ‘is this what I want from my life?’ he said.
“I left early and went home into a dark room, took the skeleton suit off and I prayed to God to help me. I’d never begged to God to help me. I could feel tears running down my face.”
Fury added: “I almost accepted that being an alcoholic was my fate but after praying for 10 minutes, I got up and felt the weight was lifted off my shoulders.
“For the first time in my life I thought I was going to be OK. I knew I couldn’t do it on my own.”

Boxer, Canelo Alvarez, pens biggest contract in sports history

October 17, 2018 1
Image result for Boxer, Canelo Alvarez, pens biggest contract in sports history
Unified middleweight world champion, Canelo Alvarez, and the streaming service DAZN have agreed to a five-year, 11-fight deal that will pay the boxer at least $365m.
The deal is the highest-paying athlete contract in history.
DAZN became the broadcast home of boxing in the U.S. after HBO announced in September that it was getting out of the fight business.
The signing of Alvarez kicks off the DAZN-boxing partnership with an exclamation point and plenty of zeroes.
Alvarez’s first fight under the contract will coincide with his move to super middleweight.
He will meet secondary world champ Rocky Fielding on December 15 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
“Canelo is the highest-paid athlete in the world. He’s extremely happy,” Oscar De La Hoya, Alvarez’s promoter, told ESPN after Alvarez signed early Wednesday.
His contract surpasses that of Giancarlo Stanton, who signed a 13-year, $325m pact with the Miami Marlins in 2014. He is now with the New York Yankees.
In the post-Floyd Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao era, Alvarez emerged as boxing’s biggest star on the pay-per-view fight circuit.
HBO and Showtime typically charged $80 per fight, but on DAZN, his two fights per year will be available to those who pay $9.99 per month for the streaming service.
“This is only from my hard work,” Alvarez told ESPN after signing the contract.
“The most important thing to me was being able to give the fans the opportunity to see me fight without having to pay the $70 or $80 for my fights on pay-per-view. That was the most important thing, more important than what I am making.
“It’s very important for me to give the fans the biggest fights and the most important fights, and I promise you I will always do that.
“The December fight with Fielding is a dangerous fight. I am moving up in weight, and I don’t know how my body will feel.
“But I always want to take on challenges, and I am very happy my fans will be able to see me fight for a small cost.”
Alvarez said he has confidence DAZN will succeed.
“I was never worried because I’m very confident in myself,” he said. “I know how important I am to any platform I go to.
“I am very grateful to HBO and to Showtime for what they did for my career, but I am happy we’re moving forward and that I will be able to fight on a platform that is the future.
“I’ve always liked a challenge, and this is yet another challenger in my career.”
The 28-year-old Alvarez is from Mexico and has a 50-1-2 career record with 34 knockouts.

Image result for Joshua hands Povetkin first career knockout defeat
Anthony Joshua, British boxer, has beaten his mandatory challenger, Russia’s Alexander Povetkin by a knockout in the seventh round, to keep hold of the WBA, (Super) IBF, WBO and IBO belts.
Joshua born by Nigerian parents, beat the Russian at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday night, to hand the Russian, his first knockout defeat in his professional boxing career.
Joshua was very brutal punching Povetkin in the closing rounds, although Jovetkin got the better of him in the earlier rounds.
After two slower opening rounds, Joshua found his range in that fight. And it was a series of accurate combinations which did it in the seventh round, first with an overhand right and then some big lefts.
His win has improved his professional career to 22 fights unbeaten, 21 of the fights by knockout.
Joshua is expected to earn £20 million and Povetkin £6 million.
The Nigerian-born boxer handed Povetkin his first knock out defeat in his professional boxing career.
Here’s the moment it happened.

Joshua seeks 22nd win in Wembley showdown with Povetkin

September 22, 2018 0
Image result for Joshua seeks 22nd win in Wembley showdown with Povetkin
British-born Nigerian Anthony Joshua returns to  the Wembley Stadium in London  on Saturday night putting  his IBF, IBO, WBO and WBA titles on the line against Russian WBA mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin.
The fight, which will be broadcast in over 160 countries, is an attempt by Joshua to retain his titles while Povetkin seeks to return to the top of the category.
The fight has a reported £26m purse with Joshua expected to take home up to £20m while Povetkin will receive £6m.
Povetkin, 39, who has lost only once in 35 fights, is a 2004 Athens Olympics gold medallist. He has won 24 of his fights by knockouts while 10 have ended in his favour by unanimous decisions. His only loss came against Vladimir Klitschko in 2013.
Joshua, who is undefeated in 21 fights – 20 of which he won through knockouts, added the WBO world heavyweight title to his collection when he beat Joseph Parker by unanimous decision in March at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
The London 2012 Olympics gold medallist defeated Klitschko at  Wembley  on April 29, 2017 to win the WBA world heavyweight title. He successfully defended the three titles against Carlos Takam on October 28, 2017 in Cardiff.
The 28-year-old, whose parents come from Sagamu in Ogun State, has revealed his sights are fixed on becoming the first man to hold all four major heavyweight world titles – a quest that could be on the cards if he wins  on Saturday.
The Povetkin clash was agreed on after both camps of Joshua and WBC world heavyweight title holder Deontay Wilder failed to agree on talks for a unification fight. The WBA ordered the fight after Povetkin knocked out David Price on the Joshua-Parker undercard.
According to Boxing Scene, Saturday’s fight will also satisfy the mandatory WBO title defence since Povetkin was ranked as number one  by both WBO and WBA. The bodies also agreed that Joshua would be named the super champion should he defeat Povetkin.
Meanwhile, Joshua was over a stone-and-a-half heavier than  Povetkin as they weighed in for their  fight at Wembley on Friday, Skysports reports.
The unified champion weighed four pounds more than for his last title fight against Joseph Parker, tipping the scales at 17st 8lbs 5oz, with Povetkin coming in at 15st 12lbs, one stone and 10 pounds lighter.
Povetkin  said after  the weigh-in he was not bothered by the development.
“It’s a very comfortable and good weight for me, I feel great,” Skysports quoted him as saying via a translator.
“I didn’t see anything in his (Joshua’s) eyes. I have prepared for speed and power.
“I’m very calm, I feel no pressure and am very happy about this fight taking place so soon.
“It’s very pleasant for me to see fans of mine here in England rooting for me. I don’t make predictions, it will be an interesting and thrilling fight.”
Despite the weight advantage,  Joshua insists he is agile enough to bring up his 22nd professional victory.
“He’s going to be quick, going to be fast, so I’ll put on my dancing shoes and be fast with my feet,” Joshua told Skysports.
“I’m a physical, strong guy, who knows how to box.”

I would quit boxing if I had Povetkin's doping problems - Joshua

July 20, 2018 0
Image result for anthony joshua
Anthony Joshua believes he would be forced to quit boxing if the heavyweight champion ever endured the kind of doping scandals that have engulfed Alexander Povetkin.
Povetkin’s presence as the mandatory opponent for British star Joshua at Wembley on September 22 has infuriated fans, who feel he shouldn’t be allowed back on the big stage after his drug issues.
The 38-year-old Russian tested positive for meldonium in May 2016, the same banned substance compatriot Maria Sharapova was suspended for taking.
The failed test led to his scheduled fight against Deontay Wilder being scrapped before the WBC accepted the explanation that he stopped taking the drug before it was on the banned list that year.
That wasn’t the only black mark against Povetkin and, in December 2016, he was found to have taken a banned muscle-building drug called ostarine.
He was suspended from WBC-sanctioned fights after the second failed test, but appealed and was allowed back into the sport with a year-long ban and a £188,000 ($245,000) fine.
Both fighters have signed up to the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association’s programme ahead of their Wembley date and have been tested twice.
But reigning WBA, IBF and WBO champion Joshua — who has never been linked with doping — claims a fighter of his profile would be made to pay a heavy price if he was found to be involved with substance abuse.
“I would never be able to box again because I would be made an example of. If I missed a drugs test or am an hour late then people will say ‘Oh, he must have been doping’,” he told reporters at Wembley on Wednesday.
“I am not the lawmaker on that stuff. I would rather take a loss than be done for doping; being done for doping is far worse for your legacy than taking a loss.”

Anthony Joshua receives OBE honor

June 09, 2018 0
World heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has received an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
The Sky Sports Ambassador currently holds WBA, IBF and WBO titles after winning his March unification clash with Joseph Parker and was honoured for his services to boxing.
This is the latest accolade for the 28-year-old Joshua, who was rewarded with an MBE in 2013 after claiming an Olympic gold medal at the London 2012 Games.
Joshua hopes to face WBC champion Deontay Wilder, with all the major belts at stake, but admits negotiations must remain ‘realistic’.
A WBA mandatory title defence against Alexander Povetkin could firstly take place in September, if the Wilder fight cannot be agreed for this year.
