Atlético lift third Europa League title

Atlético Madrid defeated Marseille 3-0 to win the Europa Cup for a third time in Wednesday.
Marseille failed to become the first French team to win a major European competition since 1995/96, when PSG beat SK Rapid Wien in the Cup Winner’s Cup.
Atletico Madrid led 1-0 at the break in the Europa League final.
Antoine Griezmann’s strike separated the two sides as Andre-Frank Zambo-Aguissa’s mistake allowed Gabi to release the Frenchman, who slotted his effort into the bottom corner in the 21st minute.
Rudi García’s men should have been ahead in the early stages when Dimitri Payet played in Valere Germain, but the striker placed his shot over the bar in the fourth minute.
The French side were dealt a massive blow when Payet was forced off with an injury 13 minutes to half time.
Griezmann doubled Atletico’s lead with a clinical finish from Koke’s cross in the 49th minute.
Gabi scored his first Europa League goal in his 25th appearance in the competition to seal the win for Atletico.

The game can be very cruel - Wenger

May 04, 2018 0

Arsenal coach, Arsene Wenger, was left devastated by Arsenal’s Europa League defeat to Atletico Madrid on Thursday but made a staunch defence of midfielder Mesut Ozil.
Ozil’s performance was heavily criticised by former Arsenal defender Martin Keown, who said the German had cried “crocodile tears” after the game, and was “not fit to wear the shirt”.
Diego Costa’s strike proved decisive at the Wanda Metropolitano where a 1-0 victory secured Atletico a 2-1 win on aggregate and a place in the final against Marseille.
Defeat ends Wenger’s hopes of leaving Arsenal on a high as his team missed out on a shot at a major trophy and squandered their last chance to qualify for the Champions League.
“I’m very sad tonight,” Wenger said. “Unfortunately you have to go through that — the game can be very cruel, sometimes very nice, but the suffering is very strong tonight.
“Looking at the chances over the two games the least we could say is we are very frustrated. The tie should have been over in the first game.”
It remains to be seen how another season outside Europe’s premier tournament will affect Arsenal’s search both for a new coach, and new signings, this summer.
“The club now has to think about what to do for next season,” Wenger said. “I think there are some good ingredients in our team and they will bounce back. With the right additions in the summer I think they can compete next year.”
Keown, however, was less optimistic and reserved a particularly harsh assessment for Ozil.
“He wasn’t fit to wear the shirt tonight,” Keown told BT Sport. “I’ve seen this a lot this season and it needs to be said. He needs to be dug out. We expect better from him.
“These are crocodile tears I’m seeing from the player. He’s not conning me. I bet he doesn’t play again this season. He’ll have some emotional breakdown and won’t play this weekend.”
When Keown’s comments were put to Wenger, he said: “I don’t agree with that. You will see that he gave a lot. It was a difficult team, physically very intense.
“I’m convinced that Ozil should not be criticised by anyone just because he did not score. We had plenty of opportunities and we lose as a team.”
Wenger also delivered an update on the fitness of Laurent Koscielny, who had to be carried off on a stretcher in the 12th minute after the defender went down, with nobody near him, clutching his left Achilles.
Arsenal and France now face an anxious wait. “It doesn’t look very good, it’s his Achilles,” Wenger said. “You can always hope for a miracle in the scan but if he has a ruptured Achilles, his chances for the World Cup are non-existent.”
Costa was the star of the show, providing the tenacity and killer instinct Arsenal so desperately lacked.
“Costa came back here for nights like this,” Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. “To be important, to lead from the front. This side needs an aggressive striker and that’s exactly what he is.”

Griezmann wants Marseille in Europa League final

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann says that he would like to play Marseille in the Europa League final – assuming both teams can progress.
OM hold a 2-0 first-leg advantage over Red Bull Salzburg heading into Thursday’s return, while Atleti are marginal favourites after a 1-1 draw away to Arsenal.
Griezmann holds Marseille in the highest esteem and had wanted to face them before now.
“They’re a team full of confidence and I think they’ll pass the second leg and go into the final. So if we also get through, I want to play them,” he told L’Equipe.
“It’s the atmosphere, it’s a city that lives for football. I wanted to play against Marseille at the Velodrome in the last 16, the quarter-finals or the semis, but the draw meant it didn’t happen.
“I love the stadium, I love the jersey, I find it beautiful.”
Indeed, the 27-year-old went as far to say that the club’s achievements eclipse those of Paris Saint-Germain and that for him they are still his homeland’s most notable club.
“For me, Marseille are the biggest club in France, even today, with PSG above them and Lyon and Monaco are competing alongside them,” he said of the 1992 Champions League winners.
“For me, it’s Marseille who are historically the biggest.”
And should Atleti progress, he is well aware of the talent they have in their ranks. Asked to pick out who he appreciated in the current side, he said: “Florian Thauvin and Dimitri Payet have been in great form. Luiz Justavo is enormous. Kostas Mitrogolou has come and started to score goals, Lucas Ocampos is finding the net too. Bouna Sarr, when he plays, is incredible.”
Griezmann has an added incentive to progress to the Europa League final, which is in his homeland on May 16.

Griezmann rescues late draw for 10-man Atletico Madrid

April 26, 2018 0
Antoine Griezmann equalised eight minutes from time to grab a 1-1 draw and give 10-man Atletico Madrid the advantage in their Europa League semi-final against Arsenal.
An expectant Emirates Stadium enjoyed an early onslaught from the Gunners in Arsene Wenger's final European home match and Atletico right-back Sime Vrsaljko haphazardly collecting two yellow cards inside the opening 10 minutes placed further onus on the hosts.
Atleti's famously miserly backline played without direction from boss Diego Simeone, who was sent to the stands by referee Clement Turpin, having refused to curtail his protests following Vrsaljko's dismissal.
They managed to hold out until the 61st-minute, when Lacazette expertly directed Jack Wilshere's cross beyond Jan Oblak.
Simeone's men had virtually disappeared as an attacking force in the closing stages but an ever-alert Griezmann preyed upon shoddy work from Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny to bear down on goal, find the roof of the net and entirely alter the complexion of an absorbing tie.

Atleti made a sloppy start in keeping with their recent wobbles in LaLiga as Wilshere intercepted a slack pass from Jose Gimenez and Vrsaljko was booked for crudely bringing down the England midfielder with 75 seconds on the clock.
Lacazette volleyed wastefully wide from Danny Welbeck's excellent cross before Oblak sharply kept out a header from the France striker.
Both opportunities arrived down Vrsaljko's flank and the right-back's torment would soon be curtailed as Lacazette touched the ball clear of the Croatia international, who trod on his ankle.

The two bookings seemed entirely justified, although not in Simeone's eyes. The Atleti boss howled for punishment when Hector Bellerin brought down Lucas Hernandez in the 13th minute and Turpin decided he had heard enough.
Arsenal's early pressure was duly ramped up, with Atletico captain Diego Godin bravely blocking from Welbeck before Oblak denied the England forward with his boot.
From the resulting 21st-minute corner, Koscielny hooked over at the back post from Lacazette's flick-on.
Atleti were now consumed with one of their famed European rearguards but the mercurial Griezmann almost beat David Ospina in the 37th minute following Thomas Partey's driving run.
Arsenal resumed with the lion's share of possession after the interval but Atleti's defensive obduracy generally drove them down blind alleys.
Just as they appeared to be running out of ideas, the home side hit the front – Griezmann was hustled out of possession on the edge of his own box and the ball was worked to Wilshere, who hung an astute cross up to the back post where Lacazette's finish was of a similar calibre.

Experienced holding midfielder Gabi came on for striker Kevin Gameiro as Atletico made it clear damage limitation was their priority, but there was time for Griezmann to atone for his earlier slip.
The 27-year-old was alive to the possibilities of a hopeful punt forward, startling countryman Koscielny into an untimely slip, shooting against Ospina and flicking into the roof of the net via the similarly prone Shkodran Mustafi.

Aaron Ramsey's flying header forced Oblak's best save of a busy night as the clock ticked down but Wenger's hopes of a golden farewell have suffered a considerable blow.
