Following allegations of bribe-taking by Kwesi Nyantakyi, president of the Ghana Football Association, the Ghanaian government has dissolved the country’s football association.
Nyantakyi was filmed accepting a cash gift from Aremayaw Anas, a Ghanaian undercover reporter.
The GFA president was also heard in the video requesting $11 million from Anas and later placing the $65,000 (£48,000) “shopping money” inside a black plastic bag.
Anas, an undercover reporter, pretended to be a businessman from a Middle Eastern company seeking to invest in Ghanaian football.
Nyantakyi was invited to a luxury hotel in the Middle East with the promise of a meeting with a wealthy businessman interested in a sponsorship deal with the GFA.
The CAF vice-president agreed to the sponsorship deal on behalf of the GFA.
According to the investigation, Nyantakyi could potentially have made $4.5m from the diversion of funds.
Ghana’s information minister, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, said the government has “decided to take immediate steps to have the GFA (Ghana Football Association) dissolved,” citing the “widespread nature of the apparent rot”.
Hamid said interim measures to govern Ghanaian football would be announced, pending the formation of a new association.
The GFA said in a statement that it would cooperate with any investigation.
