A former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State, Mr Moshood Salvador, has said the state is now a one-party state with his defection alongside his supporters to the All Progressives Congress.
Salvador stated that only the APC and the PDP existed in the state in the past, adding that the equation had changed with his defection, making the APC the only party in the state.
The ex-chairman, who quit the state PDP on August 27, spoke on Saturday at the Agege Stadium during a reception for his formal declaration organised by the Lagos APC.
The ex-chairman said now that he and his supporters had dumped the PDP for the APC, nobody would expect any party to be in the state other than the APC.
According to him, in the 2015 governorship election in the state, the PDP and APC got more than 98 per cent votes while other political parties shared less than two per cent.
He said, “I am happy to say Lagos is now a one-party state. With those who left the PDP and joined the progressives with me, the PDP is dead in Lagos. We don’t expect people to join any other political party except the APC.
“My aim, goal and target for the APC is to have 99.5 per cent of votes in the forthcoming election. We will work hard to secure between 2.5 and three million votes for our governorship candidate and over five million for our presidential candidate in 2019.”
Urging the people of Osun to elect the APC governorship candidate as governor this Saturday, he noted that it was the best way to join the best.
Salvador said, “Lagos is a pacesetter. Any state that refuses to follow what we did is wasting its time.’’
Earlier, the state APC Chairman, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun, while addressing the party members who thronged the venue in large numbers, said Salvador and his supporters’ defection to the APC showed that it was the party to beat in the state.
He said Salvador would add great value to the party.
Balogun stated, “You now have the brooms to sweep away all the torn umbrellas from Lagos. We will all work together to make Nigeria great. You will not work in vain. You will work and get your reward.”
A chieftain of the APC in the state, Senator Anthony Adefuye, also welcomed Salvador to the party.
Adefuye said, “We allowed the PDP to rule for 16 years; the APC will rule for 32 years. Salvador was the backbone of the state PDP and (he is) now with us. We are doing the PDP’s wake keep and by tomorrow, the PDP will have disappeared from Lagos. The PDP is finished.”
