The Lagos State Government has urged residents to take advantage of the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme to enjoy affordable health care.
The General Manager, Lagos State Health Management Agency, Dr Peju Adenusi, explained that with N8,000 an individual would have all his health care needs covered for a year, while a family of six needed to pay only N40,000 to enjoy treatment for common ailments, including malaria and tuberculosis.
She said the N40,000 would also cover caesarian section for a pregnant woman, as well as maternal and child care where applicable.
Adenusi, according to a statement on Monday, spoke at the commencement of a four-day training for the LSHS Wellness Ambassadors at the Public Service Staff Development Centre, in the Magodo area of the state.
She said already, no fewer than 100,000 residents had subscribed to the insurance scheme and urged other residents to take a cue after them.
She said the law establishing the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme made it compulsory for residents in order to achieve the Universal Health Coverage in line with the goal of the World Health Organisation.
According to Adenusi, the 100 ambassadors being trained would act as the foot soldiers of LASHMA to ensure that residents, especially those in the informal sector, subscribe to the scheme for their benefit.
“In this part of the world, insurance is not as widely understood as in other part of the world. We need people to pass the message and explain it to the informal sector which is the large chunk of the populace. We need the foot soldiers to help in educating the populace.
“This training, therefore, involves the health insurance scheme agents; they are our foot soldiers to let the people know that with N40,000 a family of six can enjoy adequate healthcare per annum and individuals can also register for the scheme with just N8000 per annum,” Adenusi said.
She said residents were not to pay cash to subscribe to the health insurance scheme but to use the POS machine being carried by the agents.
