The script author and director of ‘The Matrix’, a 1999 sci-fi movie, Lana Wachowski, is set to write ‘The Matrix 4’, a sequel to the three-part blockbuster film.
The fourth chapter is expected to feature Keanu Reeves as ‘Neo’ and Carrie-Anne Moss as ‘Trinity’.
‘The Matrix’ depicts a dystopian future where humanity is unknowingly trapped inside a simulated reality created by thought-capable machines to distract humans while using their bodies as an energy source.
The movie, which was first released in the United States, won four Academy Awards, appeared on lists of the greatest science fiction films, and was added to the National Film Registry for preservation in 2012.
According to Variety, the fourth instalment for the sci-fi movie would see Reeves and Moss reprise their roles as ‘Neo’ and ‘Trinity’ respectively while Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and distribute the film globally.
“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana. Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe,” said Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. chairman.
The movie is reportedly set for production in 2020.
The film currently has three parts — ‘The Matrix’, ‘The Matrix Reloaded’, and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ — which have have collectively earned over $1.6 billion at the global box office over the years.
