Nigerian skipper, John Obi Mikel has joined Turkish Super Ligue side, Trabzonspor FC, on a two-year deal.
The former Chelsea midfielder has an option of renewing for another year, the club website said on Monday.
“A 2 + 1-year agreement was signed with the free captain of the Nigerian National Team, Professional Footballer John Mikel Obi, with one-year option to transfer to our club,” the statement read.
“We would like to thank our Deputy Foreign Minister Yavuz Selim Kıran, the Consul General of Alexandria in Egypt, Ali Emre Özen, our Consul General Kemal Feyiz, and our footballer Ogenyi Onazi for his efforts in the transfer of John Obi Mikel to our club.”
The official Twitter handle also confirmed Mikel’s signing.
The 32-year old is the third Nigerian player to join the club after Ogenyi Onazi and Anthony Nwaekeme who play currently for the Ligue side.
He has been without a club after his six-month stint with the English championship side, Middlesborough.
Mikel linked up with Middlesbrough in January after dumping Chinese outfit Tianjin Teda.
He made 19 appearances for Middlesbrough and scored one goal.
The Super Eagles captain is currently on national duty in Egypt at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
